About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Audience Level: Intermediate

Ideal for participants who have a foundational understanding and are looking to expand their skills. You should have a good grasp of the basics of the Python language and some experience with data manipulation and visualisation as taught in the Introduction to Python 1 and Introduction to Data Analysis in Python courses.

Session Information:

This short course introduces you to Python scikit-learn to do data querying, exploratory analysis, and machine learning to discover things about whatever data may come across your desk.

The course materials are available at https://bristol-training.github.io/applied-data-analysis-in-python/

Action required before the session:

Please bring along your own laptop with a working Python installation, including pandas, seaborn and scikit-learn libraries. We also recommend you having Jupyter Notebooks. If you don’t have Python in your laptop, we recommend installing it via Anaconda following these instructions(this will also install Jupyter).

We are running an in-person and online JGI drop-in installation session on Friday 30th May from 11:30-12:45 - if you require any help in installing any software please attend this session.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Know how to use Jupyter Notebooks
  • Be familiar with scikit-learn, pandas, and seaborn
  • Understand the principles of machine learning (select suitable models, split data into training and test sets, fit models to data, hyperparameter tuning using grid search, understand how to evaluate model performance)
