The Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) is a Non-Ministerial Office and part of the Scottish Administration following commencement of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005.We are independent of Scottish Government and report directly to the Scottish Parliament every year.We are the regulator and registrar for over 24,000 Scottish charities including community groups, religious charities, schools, universities, grant-giving charities and major care providers. Our work as Regulator ultimately supports public confidence in charities and their work.

Your organisation can only become a charity if you meet the charity test. To do this you must have one or more charitable purposes and you must provide public benefit. 
When you apply for charitable status you need to explain clearly what the purpose of your organisation is and what activities you do or will do to meet that purpose and provide that public benefit. 
This can be a tricky task for volunteers who are new to charity law. We know there are some common errors and omissions that applicants make when applying for status which can lengthen the process.
Join Martin Tyson, Head of Regulation and Improvement and one of our Casework Team Leaders, Neil Edwards, who will explain how to meet the charity test, a bit about our application process, as well as talking you through the key requirements for application and explaining some of the trickier elements of the application form.
