The General Medical Council (GMC) expects medical appraisers to remain up to date, trained, and competent to deliver high-quality, consistent appraisals that support annual appraisal and the five-year revalidation cycle.

GMC’s good appraisal practice recommends that appraisers undertake refresher or update training at regular intervals (every 3 years), or sooner when there are significant updates to GMC guidance or appraisal frameworks.
