It’s increasingly clear that sustainability is not enough. We need much bolder thinking that can lead to system change

The Architects Declare conference, held over two afternoons, will focus on ideas that go beyond conventional sustainability and on how to dramatically transform the way we design and practice as companies The first afternoon will involve bold ideas, with a series of inspiring talks interspersed with break-out sessions. These will stretch our understanding of what is necessary rather than what is perceived to be possible. Our speakers include Roman Krznaric on how to be a good ancestor, Dr Gabrielle Walker on on the radical changes already taking place in industry as responses to climate change gather momentum, Farhana Yamin on the vital connection between construction and climate justice, and Jojo Mehta on the building momentum for a law of ecocide. The day will conclude with a presentation on the AD Strategy for Change, which describes how we want to transform the built environment so that it is planned, constructed and operated within planetary boundaries, delivering positive social impacts for all. Currently in draft form we invite contributions to this from attendees and signatories.The second afternoon is about Ideas into action. It will open with three talks about companies that have transformed the way they do business, including Expedition, Interface and British Land who will share some of the successes and challenges in how they have risen to the planetary emergency. These will be followed by a series of short presentations about disruptive and innovative ideas and we will end the day with a plenary session to discuss the inputs that participants have fed into the Strategy for Change. Taking inspiration from the ‘Three Horizons’ model developed by Bill Sharpe the event will look at three strands of thinking that lead to more effective action: Business as usual, disruptive innovation and emerging futures. By exploring this model, the conference will identify innovation, act collectively and bring out the questions that lead to change. Three Horizons is currently being used to train many of the COP26 negotiating teams, and could be used within the built environment sector to initiate attitude change.
