What to expect:
- Curated display of archival material from our collections - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace.
- Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display.
- This is a drop-in session - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of our team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items.
- Each month we focus on a specific topic, type of record, or theme.
This month's theme: "Epping Forest"
Did you know The London Archives holds the records of Epping Forest?
This ancient royal forest stretches 14 miles from Manor Park in the East of London to Epping in Essex and has long been a place of recreation for Londoners escaping the city. It is the largest open space in the London area, combining a range of landscapes as well as a rich variety of wildlife and since the 1870s it has been managed by the City of London.
In this free drop-in session you will be able to explore the records of the forest for yourself, including plans, letters, photographs and artworks. We will display records which explain how the City came to be the forest’s custodians and look at the archive material which demonstrates the management of the environment over the last century. These records provide a wonderful insight into life in and around the forest and the lives of Londoners who work and play in it.
Booking Essential: You can book for a one hour drop-in session at 1pm or 2pm.
