About this event

Hobbies • Photography

This workshop is built around the aesthetic of Are (grain/noise), Bure (blur), and Boke (out-of-focus), the signature of the Japanese Provoke Movement. Learn how to channel that raw emotional visual language using just your camera, one lens, and your eye.

  • You’re curious how blur, grain, and imperfection can tell stronger stories

What You’ll Get

  • Guided photowalk through Soho
  • Creative exercises inspired by the Provoke Movement
  • Real-time feedback and personalised shooting tips

  • Experience harnessing Soho’s restless night energy to make bold, emotionally charged images
  • Practical Snapseed editing skills to craft your photos into raw, expressive statements

Frequently asked questions

Is this workshop suitable for beginners?

Yes, as long as you’re comfortable using your camera in manual or semi-manual modes. This isn’t about technical perfection, it’s about experimenting and shooting with intention.

Do I actually need a fast prime lens?

A fast prime is ideal 28mm, 35mm, or 50mm. Zooms are fine but will make things more difficult for yourself

How much walking is involved?

We’ll be on our feet for most of the session, covering around 5-6km across Soho. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

What if it rains?

We shoot. Moody weather = better atmosphere. Bring an umbrella or rain cover for your gear. However if it’s unsafe or extreme, I’ll reschedule or offer a refund or transfer. You’ll be notified in advance if anything changes.

Do I need to install Snapseed in advance?

It helps. It’s free on both iOS and Android. Bring your phone with the app installed and a way to transfer a few photos over from your camera. I have a SD to USB-C cable you can borrow if your phone can support it

Can I shoot film?

If you must. But this workshop is designed for digital. If you're serious about shooting film, I'd recommend coming to one of my film-focused workshops instead. You'll get more out of it.
