Art. Class. War Performance Party!

ANTIUNIVERSITY NOW is a collaborative experiment to revisit and reimagine the Antiuniversity of 1968 in a programme of events inspired by the spirit, people and activities of the Antiuniversity of East London. The ANTIUNIVERSITY NOW programme challenges academic and class hierarchy through an open invitation to teach and learn any subject, in any form, anywhere. As the economic crisis lingers social class divisions have become once again relevant to political discourse. Globalization, which once promised unbound freedoms has become a restrictive force as finance capitalism, punitive military actions and commodity extraction converge in the secretive warfare of the 21st Century (as seen in Syria and Ukraine), leading to mass migration and a new virulent racism across Europe.
Art is entwined with both class division and warfare as it provides the tools to promote the interests of the capitalist class via signs which mesmerise, confuse and pacify. Sometimes these signs, like flags and royal seals, are put directly to the service of power. At other times art is used to provide a cultural distraction for the elite, who lose themselves in the irony and glamour of the biennale or art fair.
For this reason, art can only challenge the injustices of class and war if it first engages in its own internal war of class. We need to address unfair working and appointment practices, low or no wages, workplace discrimination by gender, race and sexuality as well as sexual harassment.
Art. Class. War aims to place the art world for one evening firmly at the centre of these issues involving the public in a night of music and performance, aiming above all to ask what role art has to play in the nexus of class and war. Artists: Larry Achiampong, Shiraz Bayjoo, Andrew Cooper, Chto Delat?, Snovit Hedstierna, Graham Hudson, League of Art Legends (Electronica and VJ set, Mike Watson and Simone Bertugno), Margoo, Colin Lindsay, Mark McGowan, Fiamma Montezemolo, Esther Planas, Robert Pettena.

Art. Class. War is an initiative of The Rome Process, an independent curatorial group founded by Mike Watson, which aims at addressing micro and macro level political issues via performance. The Rome Process is based in Rome.
