Event description

Description

Prepare to succeed: How will you joyfully juggle professional and personal demands whilst safeguarding your creativity and maintaining good health in 2018?

Our monthly talk series at Cass Art will address the value of ambition, forward thinking + preventative measures to help you manage the practical, physical and emotional demands of being an art professional in the 21st Century.

International Artist Rod McIntosh, recent winner of the National Open Art Emerging Artist award 2017, will be in conversation with Be Smart About Art Founder, entrepreneur Susan J Mumford.

You hear a lot about the changing art world. How exactly are artists and galleries alike coping? And what are the realities?

With nearly a decade working full-time as an artist, Rod is excellently placed to speak about the demands of being a self-employed artist; exhibiting internationally with galleries and art fairs; working to commission; managing the administration and marketing of being a small business; applying for new opportunities which help drive that art career forwards; networking; client relationships and more – in combination with looking after yourself as the most important priority of all.

In the talk, we’ll cover the following points and more:

  • What do you want for your life + career in 2018?
  • Bearing in mind your intentions, how will you balance ambition and realistic goal-setting, to pave the way for making progress – both creatively and professionally, throughout the year?
  • How will you juggle studio practice + the hidden work of administration and marketing?
  • How might you be ready for any disappointments, for example a show that doesn’t go as planned?
  • Do you worry about maintaining integrity and authenticity? If so, how can this be addressed head-on?
  • Putting in long hours in the studio and towards other commitments to boot? When can you ever have time to look after your health? And what can you do to avoid burnout?
  • Do you ever feel overwhelmed by how much you need to make for exhibitions, open studios and more?
  • Are you ever afraid that, having got this far, you could still fail? How is this type of nagging doubt – and more, addressed?

A Q&A session with the audience will follow the facilitated conversation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

ROD MCINTOSH is an artist with his studio in the midst of the English countryside of rural Kent. He works between Kent and London as an exhibiting artist and is represented by several galleries and consultants working together to build a national and international profile for his work.

He studied figurative sculpture in Sheffield, graduating in 1992. He maintained a dynamic practice alongside a successful Arts Management and academic career until 2009. When he returned full-time to the studio.

His current work as a mark-maker lies within the tradition of drawing. With his body, the breath along with materials, and repetitive often-obsessive processes, focuses an attention to the present. Observing and recording the moment of creation within a continuum.

He speaks of them as;

Physical meditations, that offers himself, and the viewer, a moment to pause.”
