This art workshop, led by Rachel Sutherland, is being held in connection with the photography exhibition ‘The Light of Other Days’ being held at The Granary Gallery, Berwick, TD15 1HJ.
The exhibition runs from 25th October-22nd February 2026, Weds - Sun 11am -4pm, admission is free
This workshop will focus on creating modern interpretations of old photographs of Berwick. Rachel recommends using the photographs in the exhibition, however, you may bring your own photograph if you have something more personal in mind, which also reflects the theme of the exhibition - of old, black and white, or sepia toned, of the past, memory, family, Berwick architecture and landscape/townscape.
Each student will analyse the photographs in terms of light, composition, perspective, focal point and scale, and add to this imagined colour, memory and painterly techniques, using sketches and overlays. We will also look at the story within the photograph - who is there, looking at what and why?
The workshop begins at 10am with a short tour of the exhibition by Rachel, after which we return to the conference room where Rachel will introduce the themes of the day as inspired by the exhibition. We break for lunch at 12.30 and you can bring a packed lunch or buy food from the cafe downstairs. We resume at 1pm and finish at 3pm. Beginners or more experienced students are welcome. There are 11 places available.
