Ascensions is a series of intergenerational conversations between RCA School of Architecture alumni.For the sixth - and final - event for Ascensions, we are bringing together four graduates from the RCA School of Architecture: Fergus Feilden (Feilden Fowles), Jane Hall (Assemble), Stephanie Macdonald (6a), and Sohanna Srinivasan.In this series, we’ve thought around and beyond “building” to develop conversations on spatial practice that are generative, innovative, and emancipatory. And yet, we have a disciplinary commitment we still want to foster, not for sake of tradition or conformity, but for a faith in good architectural design that has a weight, a form, and a force worth sustaining.Fergus, Jane, Steph, and Sohanna are back in the building to discuss their grounds and horizons and the ways in which the spirit of the RCA School of Architecture has informed and inspired their ongoing and future practice. Our guests will think through their work in both image and sound, and the ways they’ve engaged with the nuts and bolts of building buildings through detail and construction, clients and the council, materials and resources, labour and practice, landscape and climate.Held in the more informal, seminal setting of the ArtBar/Lounge, where some of the best ideas and deepest connections tend to come about, and to create a more discursive atmosphere; we want to talk, think, play some music, and collectively be together. Fergus Feilden (RCA MA Architecture 2009) is a co-founder of Feilden Fowles. The practice makes low-tech, materially rich architecture, playing with light, landscape and form. Recent projects include the Stirling Prize shortlisted Weston Gallery, Homerton Dining Hall, the National Railway Museum and a new arts and education centre in the South Downs.Jane Hall (RCA PhD Architecture 2018) is a co-founder of the architecture collective Assemble and Director of Studies in Architecture at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. She specialises in gender and architecture and has written two books, Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women and Woman Made, both of which focus on women designers globally.Stephanie Macdonald (RCA MA Architecture 1995) is the founding director of 6a architects. The studio has gained an international reputation for its housing, cultural, educational and mixed-use projects. Working at the intersection of sustainable construction and adaptive re-use, the practice seeks innovative designs to address climate and societal change.Sohanna Srinivasan (RCA MA Architecture 2016) is an architect and expert in community-led regeneration. She has delivered a range of complex mixed-use projects for Local Authority clients and currently works in the public sector in strategic policy. Sohanna is part of the Greenwich Design Review Panel and has led BA design studios at Kingston University.
