Shaykh Usman Ali

Title: Islam and Science

Synopsis:

In this short introductory lecture, the history, methodology, and philosophical frame of Science will be explored from both Islamic and Eurocentric worldviews.

Methodological concepts from traditional Islamic sciences will be paralleled in a broad sense of Science; the aim of which, to reframe and promote Islamic values and attitudes.

Brief Biography:

Shaykh Usman Ali holds an Alimiyyah degree and has taught at various Islamic institutes. He is also an Associate Lecturer and a PhD candidate at the University of Portsmouth and holds a Chartered Scientist Award. Currently, he works as a Senior Specialist in Haematology with clinical laboratory and research roles.


Lecture 2: 7:15-8:15pm (1 hour)

Dr Shoaib Malik

Title: Atheism and Islam

Synopsis:

This lecture will look at the general overview of New Atheism and how it has affected the Muslim world. It will involve looking at the movement's specific criticisms against Islam, how Muslims should engage, and how the debate has affected the intellectual landscape.

Brief Biography:

Dr Shoaib Malik is formally trained as a chemical engineer and is an assistant professor at Zayed University in Dubai where he teaches the natural sciences. He also has had some alimiyya training and is currently doing an MSc in the philosophy of science and religion. His research is specifically on Islam and Science, New Atheism, and Theology.
