Overview

Award-winning pianist and composer Aura Mae performs a selection of solo compositions, from modern piano to jazz and experimental work.

Aura Mae (also known as Ieva Dubova) is a Newcastle-based, award-winning pianist and composer whose work bridges classical repertoire, contemporary composition, and interdisciplinary performance. Latvian-born, she trained at Trinity Laban Conservatoire under Alexander Ardakov, with guest study under Pascal Rogé, and later completed a master’s degree in composition at Newcastle University.

Her concert appearances span the UK and Europe, with performances at the Royal Albert Hall, Brudenell Piano Sessions, Newcastle Piano Festival, and the Étoiles Musicales International Piano Competition in Morocco, where she served as guest composer, adjudicator, and lecturer. She has held several artistic residencies and often integrates sound art, improvisation, and live film accompaniment into her practice.

Her playing has been described as “a showcase of unique artistry and pianistic gifts,” displaying “a remarkable range of tonal color and exact articulation,” and “capable of sheer power one moment and shimmering delicacy the next” (International Alliance of Women in Music Journal, 2023). A recent concert review called her performance “a masterclass in how to compose and play contemporary piano music. Just magical” (Trust The Doc).

Aura Mae’s contemporary piano works — including the widely performed Preludes cycle — have been featured on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6, and BBC Classical Piano Focus. While her solo classical releases appear under her birth name, her current work as Aura Mae embraces a broader palette: modern piano, jazz, experimental composition, and multimedia performance.
