AuraldiversitiesA year-long programme addressing the ‘auraldiverse turn’ in Arts and Humanities research and theory, questioning how and what we hear, what we listen to and why, as situated within our contemporary milieu: that of ecological, existential, social, economic and epidemiological crises.Entwined with sonically sensile organisms, sessions extend well beyond human worlds into speculative acoustic realms of future listening.Sessions are virtual with some materials sent in advance. You must confirm you place via the email sent out within two days.///Expanded ListeningHow can listening change our relationships with time and space and others? How can we listen beyond the range that human ears are tuned to? What responsibilities and possibilities arise? How might this impact on how and to whom we listen? In these sessions we will expand our conception and experience of listening across species, states and spaces. By considering the vibrational sensitivities of other living organisms, we will learn to identify as just one of many vibro-sensile species across phyla and even kingdoms. Through engaging in pre-buddhist philosophy, embodied practices and emerging technologies we will experience listening through altered cognitive states and expand our listening in space and time. Featuring ecoacoustics, biosemiotics, plant bioacoustics, invertebrate tremology, ant music, pre-buddhist philosophy and practice, feldenkrais, deep listening, telematic improvisation and sonic augmented reality.///Session FourXimena AlarcónSentient: Listening deeply in-between places, for presenceThis two-hour workshop will invite participants to engage in the complexity of the listening phenomena by practicing simple exercises from Pauline Oliveros’ embodied Deep Listening® practice and philosophy. Deep Listening seeks to expand our awareness of sound and how it travels through time and space, how it “touches” us and “touches” others, creating a dynamic of interaction, attention, vibration and resonance, internal and external, among all of us who inhabit in near and distant spaces. Through listening journaling, sound meditations, improvisation, body energy exercises (Chi Kung), and incorporating the Internet as a means of interconnection and expansion of our presence, and perception of place, the participants will have the opportunity to listen to themselves, and to each other in a shared present, as well as in a multi-temporal space, like in a dream. In the current context of dislocation this expansion might support our new ‘positioning’ in our listening relationship between ourselves and all sentient beings.Dr Ximena Alarcón is a sound artist interested in listening to in-between sonic spaces and how they are manifested in dreams, underground public transport and the migratory context. Her research focuses on creating telematic improvisations using Deep Listening®, and interfaces for relational listening. Her most recognized works are the interactive sound space Sounding Underground (IOCT-DMU, The Leverhulme Trust Fellowship 2007-2009), the telematic sonic performances Networked Migrations (CRiSAP - UAL, 2011-2017), and INTIMAL: Interfaces for Listening Relational (RITMO-UiO, 2017-2019, Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship). Ximena is a Deep Listening® Senior Tutor for the online certification program offered by the Center for Deep Listening (RPI), and has taught the practice in Colombia, India, Spain, Germany, Greece, Mexico, Brazil and the UK. Currently she works independently in the second phase of INTIMAL that involves: an "embodied" physical-virtual system for listening to migrations; a virtual territory of Latin American migrant women; and a co-creation laboratory with the INTIMAL territory. https://www.ximenaalarcon.net . http://intimal.net/ / /Ansuman BiswasThe Music of what happensIn this session we will explore some practical routes towards the expansion of listening. We will consider the relative merits of psychedelic substances, early Buddhist and pre-Buddhist exercises, Indian Classical music, and Feldenkrais. Through this methodical triangulation we will seek to evaluate our own position and formulate an appropriate praxis.Approaches to time dilation, tonal space and ethics will be examined from various angles through a mixture of presentation and practical exercises. I will also share some conceptual underpinnings and performative examples from my own work: Befriending silence - CAT; Resonance and Entrainment - self/portrait; Hearing others - Array; Renunciation and Reliance - Alien; Growing new organs - First Light; Listening beyond the walls - Panaudicon.Ansuman Biswas has an international, interdisciplinary practice which has included directing Shakespeare in America, translating Tagore, designing underwater sculptures in the Red Sea, living with wandering minstrels in India, being an ornamental hermit in the English countryside, touring with Björk, surviving blindfolded in an unknown place, travelling with nomadic shamans in the Gobi Desert, playing with Oasis, collaborating with neuroscientists in Arizona, living for a week with nothing but what spectators chose to give him, singing for 24 hours non-stop, organizing grassroots activists in Soweto, meditating in a box for ten days with no food or light, creating a musical in a maximum security prison, working in R&amp;D for Hewlett-Packard, being a soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, bathing strangers, holding seminars in a Burmese monastery, running a club for women in Hamburg’s red light district, playing with terminally ill children, making a radio telescope sing and dance, being locked in a Gothic tower alone for forty days and nights, flying on a real, live, magic carpet, and stopping time. www.ansuman.com / / /Cecile Chevalier &amp; Chris KieferListening Mirrors: Shared Sound Worlds in Augmented RealityListening Mirrors 2.0 is a sound art installation and evolving instrument that warps and blurs the boundaries between real and imagined realities, opening up a new space for participants to explore these two worlds as one. It challenges our perception with augmented audio reality system and promotes shared modes of musical expression for musicians and non-musicians alike. The instrument investigates ways in which sensory otherness can be made possible using an Audiomented Sound System (ASS) and acoustic mirrors, whilst exploring how such environments promote new body-technology relations and collaborative sonic expression. Listening Mirrors 2.0 has its own custom-made hardware system for audio augmented reality comprising a transceiver with bone-conduction headphones. These elements are digitally networked and excited by transducers that stream sound from the real and imaginary sonic environments. As the participants enter the space, they are asked to wear the bone-conductor headphone and clip on the Audio Augmented Reality headset. From that point the participant is experiencing two sound worlds: the inner one (fed through the headphone) and the outer one (fed through their own hearing). During the event, we will discuss our experience of designing Listening Mirrors, and run a shared listening experience using the Audiomented Sound System. www.listeningmirrors.netCécile Chevalier and Chris Kiefer are a FR/UK artist duo who test out the sonic, physical and technological boundaries of collective experiences through interactive sound art. They locate their work within cybernetics and systems art, drawing on new algorithmic and material technologies, creating technologically altered perception and playful interactive experiences.
