Overview

Sensory differences can mean big challenges for autistic children and none can have a bigger impact than their internal sense: interoception

Autism & Interoception session

Interoception is our sense of what’s happening inside our bodies - things like hunger, thirst, pain, needing the toilet, or noticing emotions. For autistic children, differences in interoception can be particularly challenging, as they may struggle to recognise or interpret these internal signals.

In this session, we’ll explore:

  • What interoception is and why it matters
  • How interoceptive differences can affect autistic children and young people
  • Practical strategies and tips to support interoceptive needs
  • Ways to promote understanding and inclusivity at home, in education, and in care settings

Join us for this engaging and practical session, designed to provide valuable insights and tools for parents, caregivers, and professionals supporting autistic children.

Our expert speaker Loren Snow is an autistic neurodiversity consultant with over ten years experience teaching people about autism. Their professional background includes supporting families with loved ones in psychiatric and eating disorder hospitals to get them back into the community or to prevent hospital admittance. They have also taught and supported tens of thousands of families, professionals, and autistic people and are one of the UK’s lead trainers for The NHS and Social Care's mandatory training on autism.
