Barnes Class: Introduction to Drawing Faces
Tue, 2 May 2017, 09:30 – Tue, 23 May 2017, 12:30 BST
The latest incarnation of our super-popular drawing class with local artist Michael Ajerman begins 2nd May and will focus on Drawing Faces: nose, eyes, mouth, and head. These features cause a great deal of difficulty for even the most accomplished artists. This term, students will address these issues by focussing on details of the human head, working in pencil, coloured pencil, charcoal, and/or pastel pencils.
Week 1 - 2nd May
Students will draw from art reproduction (Paula Rego, Caravaggio, Ingres, Hockney, Velazquez and others) with a focus on details from these painted faces. Heads will be drawn large or life-size during class. This will enable minor details to become monumental and forms to really be addressed.
Week 2 - 9th May
Students will work from a single portrait photographic image of their choice (A4 scale is necessary). This can be a photograph of a family member, news clipping, or other photograph. These drawn heads will be rendered large or life-size. This is an opportunity to observe and to help students understand the basic shapes, details, and mechanics of the human head and bring this onto a page in a two dimensional form.
Week 3 - 16th May
A livenmodel will be present and students will incorporate the lessons learned from the previous classes whilst drawing from the human form. Students will have the opportunity to explore portraiture in the face and have the opportunity to explore body language with both long and short poses.
Week 4 - 23rd May
A live model will be present and students will incorporate the lessons learned from the previous class whilst drawing from the human form.
All basic materials are provided. It is recommended that if students have a medium they wish to explore or already have (coloured pencils, pastels, conte’) to please bring it to the class. The more variety, the better!
