A shorter weaving course designed to introduce working with willow to students

Workshop Description:

A shorter weaving course designed to introduce working with willow to students, who will weave a stylish

boat shaped basket suitable for holding a small amount of fruit, nuts, or the contents of your pockets! We

will work with different colours of organically grown Scottish willows.

We will be making a gorgeous long thin basket made from stout ribs and very fine beautiful coloured

willows for the weaving. We will initially hold the ribs in place using a cardboard former and rubber bands

(all the tricks of the trade!!), and once the shape is set, remove these which will also make enable the

weaving rods to pass in and out more easily. Each student’s basket is likely to take on its own unique

character, and people will be able to use Anna’s homegrown organic willows in striking different colours

to enable this! Attention will be given to the grading of the willows and the shaping of the pieces, and each

person will leave with their own masterpiece.

Students may bring their own secateurs if they wish.

Tutor Biography:

Anna was drawn to basketmaking whilst her children were tiny and she lived and worked at a small land focussed

housing co-operative set in 50 acres of farmland in Lanarkshire. A want for beautiful toy baskets

coupled with the unsuitability of metal work (her previous passion) around toddlers and an abundance of

natural materials on the land led her to thinking that making her own baskets would be a good idea. A lot

of willow had been planted at the co-operative for habitat creation, wind shelter, and craft use. Anna

became aware of the versatility of willow and was inspired by its zero carbon footprint. She loved the fact

that she could create a basket with the use of no fossil fuels bar those involved in the production of the

secateurs and the chocolate she ate during the harvesting!

The workshop is restricted to ten students, so book soon to avoid disappointment.
