Event description

Description

The Smithsonian Institution will host its first ever Bayesian Chronological Modeling Workshop for the 83rd Annual Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Meeting in Washington, DC.

Dr. Tony Krus & Dr. Derek Hamilton, the ‘Chronological Modeling Team’ from the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Center (SUERC) at the University of Glasgow, will teach this two-day interactive workshop. Space is very limited, so sign up now to learn how to develop and critically evaluate archaeological applications of Bayesian chronological modeling.

Day 1 (Tuesday, 10 April 2018, 09:00 to 16:30) Bayesian Modeling for Beginners will cover an introduction to radiocarbon dating and Bayesian chronological modeling.

Day 2 (Wednesday, 11 April 2018, 09:00 to 16:30) Advanced Modeling Techniques will cover the more advanced features in OxCal and provide more practical work with creating complex models.

Lunch, snacks, coffee, and other refreshments will be provided both days of the workshop. A printed workbook designed for the workshop will also be provided to all participants. The workbook will include descriptions of fundamental chronological modeling techniques, exercises demonstrating different techniques, and an annotated bibliography of key literature.

The cost for a 2-day ticket is $149 for students and $239 for non-students. Lunch, snacks, refreshments, and a workbook are also included in the ticket costs. Students will be e-mailed to request a scan of their current student ID to verify status.

It is possible to purchase a single-day ticket for Day 1 through EventBrite. The prices are $99 for students and $149 for non-students. If you have attended a previous course by the organizers and wish only to attend Day 2, please contact us directly to make arrangements.

Participants are required to bring a laptop to the workshop and should prepare to use their laptops throughout the day. Exercises will be conducted with OxCal, a free, user friendly package.

If you register for the workshop, instructions on how to install OxCal locally on your laptop and other important information about the workshop will be emailed to you.
