This exciting Digital Cities event at NWRC will focus on short-form content production for online media and radio broadcast

Format:10:00-11:00 (Room D3.323, Northland Building)Panel Discussion: Short-form Media ProductionWith Dan Quick, Jonny Millar and Kathy Donaghy. The 3 panellists will discuss short-form news production for online and broadcast, the emergence of podcasting, career progression, advice and guidance on how to progress in the media industry, finishing off with a Q&amp;A.11:30-14:00: Workshops3 workshops focusing on short-form content production for radio and online media. Workshop 1: Digital Reporting and Short-form Radio Production Facilitator: Jonny Millar Having worked as a solutions expert for Apple UK’s consultative arm, Jonny started as a multimedia journalist for news and magazine publisher Archant UK and has worked as digital coordinator, digital editor and news editor across a number of local, regional and city daily papers for Newsquest. He is now a broadcast journalist and newsreader for BBC Radio NI. Jonny also has experience as the digital manager of a public relations, digital marketing and content development agency.This workshop will cover effective news gathering, reporting and the production of short-form content for broadcast and use online, including scripting for voice delivery, interview techniques, bulletin writing and radio production. Workshop 2: How to Produce a Podcast Facilitator: Dan QuickDan spent 4 years at Sky Sports News Radio as an Audio Producer before joining the podcast platform Audioboom as Senior Producer before becoming Head of UK Content. During this time he produced a range of podcasts (including The Russell Brand Podcast, Alan Brazil Upfront and News Roast) and was also part of the management team for some of the UK&#x27;s biggest podcasts, including No Such Thing As A Fish and Athletico Mince. For the last 2 years Dan have been working for BBC NI as a Producer and Studio manager for BBC Radio Ulster, while continuing to produce and consult for a number of different podcasts. He is currently producing Sue Perkins: An Hour Or So With... which launched in October 2019. This workshop will focus on the production process for delivering podcasts, covering how to select the best topic, format and platform for a podcast, technical set-up and recording techniques, advice on how to build an audience, options for monetisation and tips on best-practice.Workshop 3: Scripting a News Story for Broadcast Facilitator: Kathy DonaghyKathy is an award winning journalist across print, broadcast and online media. She has worked as a staff journalist for the Irish Independent and RTE news and current affairs. She has covered a diverse range of stories from politics to the law as well as famine in Kenya and the abduction of children to work as child soldiers in Uganda. Kathy now works as a freelance journalist. In this workshop, participants will be provided with the bare bones of a story and will then make decisions on who they would interview, what the script would say, what pictures would be used and what material should be prioritised in a time-limited production. This session will give participants a practical understanding of the importance of keeping within the time allowed, listening to the interviewee, writing a script, the importance of storytelling in any news item and the use of images in online and broadcast content.
