Snapchat or Instagram stories? Video content or textual analysis? Quick, snappy atomised stories or in-depth features?
When it comes to reaching young audiences, long established media outlets are in danger of simply following the latest trends in research and social media. Join our latest #newsHACK for a chance to develop your own ideas about reaching these vital groups.
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism <A HREF="https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/sites/default/files/2018-01/RISJ%20Trends%20and%20Predictions%202018%20NN.pdf" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">predicted</A> that “targeting the tweens” would be a major development to watch in 2018. The BBC has made it a priority to <A HREF="http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2017/bbc-annual-plan-2017-18" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">reinvent itself for a new generation</A>, given research showing that there are still gaps between traditional media coverage and the consumption habits of under-35s.  
As media organisations look to reach the next generation of users, how can they engage with young citizens whose news needs are sometimes lost in all of the noise?
BBC Connected Studio and BBC News Labs are holding a collaborative #newsHACK event in London on Tuesday 3rd & Wednesday 4th July to explore new and engaging ways of delivering news to younger audiences. Participants will be asked to prototype a new format that addresses one or more news needs identified by our research. These include:

“News grazing”, or the habit of checking frequently for news updates throughout the day
</LI>
<LI>
The need for news’ relevance to be clear and accessible
</LI>
<LI>
The desire for human significance in reported news
</LI>
</UL>
Teams of academics, students, developers, UX designers, editorial staff and other media-enthused professionals are invited to register, as multi-skilled teams.
Please note that all teams must be mixed-gendered.
 
The challenge
We’re looking to award prizes in the following categories:

Boldest new format for engaging young audiences
</LI>
<LI>
Most likely to drive habitual behaviour in U35s
</LI>
<LI>
Most participative format
</LI>
<LI>
Surprise us!
</LI>
</UL>
Judges will also be considering how well the prototypes address the news needs presented at the start of the event.
While judges will select winners in each of the categories, the primary nature of the event is to provide opportunities for networking and collaboration.
