An interactive discussion of a discrimination case.
Have you ever wanted to know how decisions are made at the Supreme Court?
During the workshops, you will discuss and debate a real-life case which came before the Judges here at the Supreme Court. How did the case make it to the final court of appeal? What were the issues at stake? Why and how did the judges reach their decision and what were the implications of the judgment? Do you agree with the final outcome? How would you have voted on this case if you were a Supreme Court Justice?
This interactive workshop, led by Dr. David Yuratich, a lecturer in Law at Royal Holloway University of London is suitable for participants age 14 years and above with no prior knowledge of law. 
You will look at the case of Bull and another v Hall and another, which concerns the law on discrimination. Mr and Mrs Bull who owned a private hotel in Cornwall, refused to allow a gay couple to stay in a double room. The couple took the owners to court, arguing that they had been discriminated against based on their sexual orientation. The Christian owners held that allowing a non-married couple to stay in their home was against their religious beliefs and so being forced to do so would have been an infringement of Article 9 of the European Convention of Human Rights <A HREF="https://www.supremecourt.uk/cases/docs/uksc-2012-0065-press-summary.pdf" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.supremecourt.uk/cases/docs/uksc-2012-0065-press-summary.pdf</A>

This workshop is free but advanced booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. Ticket holders must arrive 15 minutes early to the Lawyers' Suite to avoid places being reallocated. Allow 20 minutes for queueing and to pass through security.
