This tour is modelled on the route taken by the Lambeth churchwardens when "beating the bounds" in the 17th and 18th centuries. It took them two days on foot; by bike we will accomplish the sixteen mile circuit back to the Thames in just six hours.
Starting from Bernie Spain Gardens on Barge House Street, on the Thames close to Blackfriars Bridge, we will follow the parish boundary south through Kennington and Herne Hill to Crystal Palace. It was here, at the top of a steep climb at the site of the ancient marker, Vicars Oak, that the church wardens and parishioners would pause for the first night for a celebratory feast. Continuing west along Central Hill and then north down-hill through Brixton Hill, Stockwell to the Clapham and Wandsworth Roads, the boundary arrives back on the Thames at Nine Elms.
There will be regular stops along the route when Jon will give short historical and topographical commentaries. We will break for lunch in Norwood Park, adjacent to a cafe and toilets, but do also bring your own food and drink.
The route is moderately demanding, with one steep ascent up Gipsy Hill to Crystal Palace. Four hours cycling plus stops.
