Julian Brown (a senior lecturer and researcher in mathematics education at the University of Bristol) discusses approaches to students practising mathematics.It is widely accepted that the practising of mathematical skills and processes is a key aspect of developing as a mathematician. The first aim listed in the mathematics programmes of study from the National Curriculum for England is that all pupils “become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice”. Alongside this, a growing focus on ‘teaching for mastery’ in mathematics has meant that many teachers are giving more attention to the types and structure of practice tasks that they offer to learners.In this webinar, we will look together at the following questions:• What do we know about types of practice structures and their effectiveness?• What do we notice when we make use of practice structures ourselves?• What might practice tasks look like in order to support progress through the curriculum and development of mathematical habits?
