About this event

The Bectu Starting Safely course.

This is a new health & safety course from Bectu delivered online via Zoom.

What is the Bectu Starting Safely course?

The Bectu Starting Safely course is a three-hour health & safety course designed specifically for workers, employed or freelance, working in film, TV, theatre and live events. It promotes a safety culture based on personal responsibility for safety. This means that it encourages delegates to be pro-active in their own safety and the safety of others. The course is aimed at employees and freelance workers who are not Head of Department or must write risk assessments. The Creative Industries Safety Passport covers the higher level.

The course is approved by ScreenSkills and meets the National Occupational Standards in Health & Safety. It is valid for 5 years and comes with a workbook pdf and a Screenskills and a Bectu certificate. With so many employers asking for proof of health and safety training Bectu is providing an approved qualification that is relevant to creative industries workers.

What is the course content?

The course was designed in 2023 and covers the basics a delegate needs in health & safety as well as focusing on specific hazards that come up in the creative industries. It is regularly updated to reflect the working environment.

The Learning outcomes are:

1. Identify why it is important to work safely and everyone’s responsibilities in relation to safety, health, and wellbeing in the workplace.

2. Understand your scope and responsibility for rectifying risks.

3. Identify workplace hazards and risks, their impact and how to control them.

4. Identify your role within safety, health and wellbeing are managed in the workplace.

The course is split into 4 modules with breaks in between:

  • Introducing creative industry safety; this covers why health & safety matters, health & safety legislation, duties of employees, self-employed and contractors under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and what is a health & safety policy.
  • Defining hazard and risk; this covers what is a hazard and a risk, competence & risk perceptions.
  • Hazards and practical control measures; this covers slips and trips, manual handling, electricity, display screen equipment, working at height, work equipment, hazardous substances, asbestos, noise, driving, drones, violence, terrorist threats, stress, mental health, fire and hidden hazards.
  • Improving safety performance; this covers health & safety in the workplace, controlling risk, keeping people safe in the workplace, working time, safe systems of work, personal protective equipment (PPE), signs and signals, first aid, accidents, accident reporting, safety representatives & personal responsibility.

The course uses a mix of teaching styles, including video and discussion to enhance the learning experience. Delegates can bring real issues and near miss incidents to increase the relevance of the course. All the trainers are IOSH accredited and have a wealth of knowledge and experience working in the creative industries.

The course has an online assessment with ten questions, mainly multiple choice with a maximum mark of 20. To be eligible to receive a passport certificate you must achieve a total minimum pass mark of 12.

For the assessments, a link will be sent to you to complete the assessments; the first for the practice test with 5 minutes to complete, the second for the assessment with 10 minutes to complete. Each assessment has a time window allotted to access the assessment, it will only be available for the day and time of the training. The assessment must be completed not using the workbook or web search aids while the video camera is on and can be monitored by the tutor under exam conditions. You will receive your mark on completion of the assessment.

For any student requiring any reasonable adjustments to completing the assessments, an extra 5 minutes per assessment can be requested.
