Has COVID changed how we think about carers?

Has COVID changed how we think about carers? Those people who are family members, friends or neighbours without whom many people’s lives would just not work. Beds Cares! Is a celebration of the informal carers in our Bedfordshire community and a chance to discuss research ideas about carer wellbeing going into the future. The University of Bedfordshire invites all carers in our community: staff who are working carers, student carers and members of the public who are carers to come and join in. So if you are a carer and maybe someone’s brother, sister, mum, dad, wife, husband or friend this event is for you! <ul><li>10.00 to 12.00 pm </li><li>Thursday 26th November </li><li>FREE </li><li>Event will be hosted on Zoom </li></ul>Contributors include: Dr Emma Wilkinson &amp; Dr Yannis Pappas (University of Bedfordshire), Dr Jitka Vseteckova (Open University) &amp; Prof Marie-Pierre Moreau (Anglia Ruskin University), Carers in Bedfordshire, the Disability Resource Centre. We hope this will be interesting to you wherever you come from in your caring role. You will get to hear about some of the projects that researchers are working on as well from local organisations who support carers in different ways. Dr Emma Wilkinson 12.00 - Finish BiographiesDr Yannis Pappas Yannis is Reader in Health Service Organisation and Delivery, Head of the Doctorate School in the Institute for Health Research at the University of Bedfordshire and Senior Fellow with the Higher Education Academy. His work focuses on organisation and delivery as well as policy making in health and social care. At international level, he is advisor on eHealth and health services research and worked with the European Commission as specialist evaluator. At national level, he sat in several panels, including an NIHR advisory panel, and trained Academic GPs with the London Deanery. He has worked with local Councils and other stakeholders to evaluate health and social care interventions, especially integrated care and social prescription. Yannis’ work on carers has uncovered gaps in the ways that the care for individuals with learning disabilities and their older carers is organised and has been working with colleagues to improve the organisation and delivery of local services, in particular, preventing crises. Dr Jitka Vseteckova Jitka is Senior Lecturer at the Open University, Faculty of Wellbeing, Education &amp; Language Studies where she is involved in research, teaching, supervision and external collaborations.Her work addresses national, regional and local-level health and social care priorities particularly in for the improvement of outcomes for elderly persons, carers in general and carers for vulnerable groups of peopleJitka is deputy chair of Carers Research Group at The Open University where there is an established way of involving people with lived experience (carers) and people who work with people with lived experience and including them in all stages of research.Locally, she leads on an evaluation of a walking programme for people with dementia and their families/carers living in Milton Keynes www.keepmewalking.info . Recently (2020) Jitka was funded as Co-I by NIHR (£900,000) to support ageing carers for people with learning disabilities to plan ahead. Prof Marie-Pierre Moreau Marie-Pierre Moreau is Professor in Education and Education Research Lead in the School of Education and Social Care, Anglia Ruskin University. A sociologist by training, her research is located at the nexus of education, work and inequalities. Her current research concentrates in two key areas: teachers&#x27; identities and careers, with specific reference to gender and the relationship between care and academic work, with specific reference to the way students and academic staff with caring responsibilities are positioned in academic discourses. Recent research projects have been: <ul><li>2018-2019: ‘Care-free at the top’? Exploring the experiences of senior academic staff who are caregivers, funded by the Society for Research into Higher Education, 2017 Research Awards </li><li>2018: Carers and careers in academia: What works?, funded by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education </li><li>2016: Carers and careers: Career development and access to leadership positions among academic staff with caring responsibilities, funded by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education </li></ul>
