Beginners Bumblebee Identification & BeeBlitz
Celebrate National Insect Week with a FREE introductory bumblebee identification workshop.
Did you know there are 21 different bumblebee species in Scotland? Join Skills for Bees: Scotland Project Officer Lucy and for a full day of bumblebee discovery at Glen Tanar Visitor Centre. This FREE event combines a morning classroom session on bumblebee identification with an afternoon ‘BeeBlitz’ field survey, putting your new skills into practice. Designed for beginners, the morning session introduces bumblebees, why they matter, and how to identify common UK species as well as some of the scarce and local species found in the Cairngorms National Park. You’ll also learn how to record sightings and contribute valuable scientific data to help fill gaps in our understanding of bumblebee populations. The afternoon will be outdoors at Glen Tanar focusing on surveying bumblebees across a range of habitats, including forest, heathland and grassland, with a particular focus on the nationally rare Blaeberry bumblebee (Bombus monticola). Please bring a packed lunch, suitable warm clothing, and walking shoes.
