Beginners Classical Landscapes in Watercolour

By Soho Life Drawing

Overview

Master classical watercolour landscapes with award-winning artist Ann Mackowski — paint like Sargent, Turner, and Constable.

Unlock the secrets of classical watercolour landscape painting in this inspiring workshop led by an award-winning artist. Perfect for both beginners and those looking to refine their skills, this immersive class begins with a concise introduction to watercolour materials and techniques, ensuring everyone feels confident from the first brushstroke. Then we journey into the world of colour and composition as seen through the eyes of masters like John Singer Sargent, J.M.W. Turner, and John Constable—artists whose interpretations of light and landscape continue to influence painters to this day.

With a strong focus on Sargent’s distinctive approach to watercolour, you'll explore how to capture mood, atmosphere, and structure using a limited classical palette. We'll break down the essential elements of landscape composition, looking at how these iconic artists built drama and depth using washes, layering, and expressive brushwork. Whether you're inspired by the wild English countryside or the sun-drenched canals of Venice, you'll learn how to translate nature into timeless works of art.

All materials are provided, so you can simply arrive ready to paint and enjoy. Midway through the session, we’ll take a relaxed break with light refreshments, giving you a chance to chat, share ideas, and connect with fellow art lovers. The class concludes with a guided paint-along, where you’ll create your own reproduction of one of Sargent’s stunning Venice watercolours—a beautiful, frame-worthy piece to take home, along with the techniques and confidence to continue your own artistic journey. Finally, Ann will upload a video of the days techniques and demos for you to review in your own time once the class is finished.
