Beginners Knitting Course (over 3 evenings)

Established in June 2000 on Broadway Market, East London by textile designer maker, Barley Massey,Fabricationshas grown into a buzzing hub of creativity focusing on social textiles, upcycling and eco design through our shop, studio and classes. 25 years on our aim is still to inspire a joy of making whilst encouraging thoughtful and resourceful ways of living in a welcoming and creative environment.In ourbricks & mortaroronlineshop, discover one off upcycled creations to wear, give as gifts or dress your home with! Items are created by Barley all year round, changing with the seasons, and due to the  recycled nature and the spontaneous way she works with 'waste' materials and pre loved clothing, each piece is unique and unrepeatable.Fabrications is also a great source of crafting supplies to fuel your next project, whether it’s knitting, crochet, weaving, macramé, embroidery, sewing, dressmaking or another creative endeavor. We are dedicated to offering good quality supplies at a fair price from local, sustainable & ethical sources. Fabrications is also an authorised local dealer of domesticBrothersewing machines, overlockers and accessories.In the studio, we offer a commissioning service, including Barley's sensitive'Remember Me'service, which enables you to bring along old garments and textiles holding sentimental value to be transformed into comforting home furnishings, new garments or gifts for loved ones.The Studio or "Imaginerium" is also open as a creative classroom, offering a regular programme ofclasses, events and our popular fortnightly Community "Craft Club". Knitting & Crochet Classes

Start or Progress your Knitting or Crochet skills with us! The repetitive manual motion of these skills aid mental wellbeing, enhance concentration, offer an antidote to screen activity, keep us warm, and even save marriages! So our students tell us!

Our Beginners Knitting course has been specifically developed to meet the needs of those wishing to take the first step into the world of knitting. These classes will not only introduce you to the fundamentals of knitting but also to practical advice on yarns, needles and pattern reading. The classes are taught by Barley Massey and Aikeda Watson, who will watch over your learning with care, offer feedback/observations and answer your questions as they arise! Please Note: Classes take place every other Thursday, There will also be some homework in between classes to keep up your practise and to help you gain more understanding and confidence with the techniques shown during class. You are also welcome to join our &#x27;Community Craft Club&#x27; which takes place on the Thursday&#x27;s between classes.Part 1: Thursday 12th January, 6:30 - 9pm- Understand the relationship between wool and needle sizes- Make a Slip knot, use ‘thumb’ and ‘knitting on’ methods of casting on.- Complete a plain stitch.- Introduce a new ball of wool or new colour.Homework: Carry on with your sampler to build confidence and rhythm. Part 2: Thursday 26th January, 6:30 - 9pm- Refresh on skills from Part 1- Complete a purl stitch.- Understand how to combine plain &amp; purl stitch to create new stitches, eg: stocking stitch, ribbing and moss stitch.- Read simple stitch patterns. - How to cast off and sew in ends neatly and securely.Homework: Simple snood project using the different textures you&#x27;ve learnt.Part 3: Thursday 9th February, 6:30 - 9pm- Refresh on skills from Part 1 &amp; 2- Decode the language / abbreviations used in knitting patterns and apply to your knitting- Simple increasing and decreasing methods to create shaping.- Sewing up your knits and getting a neat finish- Get advice on a project you would like to start.A starter kit and yarn for your homework projects are included. There will also be some simple worksheets, online tutorial links e-mailed in between classes.
