Beginning at intersections: A multimedia maker session with Grapevine

Join Zinedabaad for a Maker Session exploring Grapevine,  an experimental tool for connecting artists and audiences outside the mainstream.

Messaging apps inhabit our every day. What if authors, artists and audiences could leverage their presence to amplify the cultural and linguistic diversity of the stories we tell and listen to around the world? At this Maker Session, taking place on Zoom, you will be introduced to <a href="https://grapevine.ink/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Grapevine</a>, an experimental new technology that does just that - without taking up space on your app real estate. Grapevine&#x27;s Maker tool enables you to connect artwork to gently interactive, multimedia content which your audience unlocks with WhatsApp or Telegram—and shares with friends, family and beyond. It supports those working in vision, sound, words or video, and brings together artists and audiences outside the mainstream, as will be presented in the <a href="http://mixconference.org/session/panel-9-audio-and-audiences/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">MIX 2021 panel on Audio and Audiences</a>. Participants will get the chance to engage with Grapevine directly.The facilitators of this Maker Session are members of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/zinedabaad/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zinedabaad</a>—a collective run by brown women and queer folx, committed to creating safe, inclusive and accessible zine-making spaces. Zinedabaad Collective was chosen by Grapevine to be a part of their Trailblazers program, to blend DIY zine culture with multimedia storytelling. The word ‘zindabaad’ in Hindustani (Hindi and Urdu, roughly) means ‘long live’. Zinedabaad Collective is rooted in this spirit of independent publishing, and of re-imagining the life of paper. This Maker Session will begin at these intersections—where zines, audio and accessibility meet. It will be a space to push the boundaries of storytelling by thinking through questions of language, narrative layering, and online engagement that is rooted in physicality. To participate in this Maker Session, you will need: A quiet space to attend the workshop fromA mobile phone and a laptop/computerWhatsApp or TelegramSpace on your phone for video, photos, and audio recordingsAny other materials you may need will be communicated to you after registration. The Facilitators Riya Behl is an artist. She is the co-founder of Zinedabaad — a collective run by brown women and queer folx, committed to creating safe, inclusive and accessible zine-making spaces. Parallelly, Riya works at the People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI), a journalism website reporting the stories of 833 million rural Indians, in up to 13 regional languages. She lives in Mumbai, and enjoys playing Ultimate frisbee on the beach. Devashree Somani is the co-founder of Zinedabaad—a collective run by brown women and queer folx, committed to creating safe, inclusive and accessible zine-making spaces. As a Trailblazer with Grapevine, they are interested in experimenting with new media. A writer and researcher, they strive to document diverse stories about gender and its various intersections with caste, sexuality and class. While working with research centres, grassroots organisations and people’s collectives, she also curates a quarterly poetry and anthology zine, Kalavaram.
