A women’s circle for Beltane with Mugwort tea ritual, monochord and crystal singing bowl sound meditation.
Join María Christofi in the lead up to Beltane and full moon for the next in a series of women's circles rooted in gentle restoration.
Numbers are kept to only 4 to allow for an intimate space.
The name Beltane originates from the Celtic Sun god Bel and translates to bright fire.
As a fire festival, Beltane marks a potent time to illuminate what we desire to create and birth in this next half of the year, burning what we no longer need in the symbolic fire as we finally shed the skin of winter.
We will open the evening with a warming infusion made from the herb Mugwort, one of the nine sacred herbs in Celtic history.
There will be time to share or simply listen and settle in, before guided meditation and deep immersion in monochord and pure quartz singing bowls before fading into ethereal chimes to call in the spirit of summer.
These sound sequences will be composed to entrain the brain into the Theta waves to encourage deep relaxation.
Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris) has a rich history in British folklore for both magical and medicinal practices. Our intention will be to connect with it's mood calming and dream enhancing properties. It will also be burnt with incense resins to purify the space. As a prelude to visionary ritual the ancients burned precious incense. Aroma has a strong effect on the olfactory nerve and limbic system in the brain which is associated with creativity, emotions, relaxation and memory.
About Beltane
On the wheel of the year, Beltane arrives 6 months after Samhain when the veils of the energetic barrier between the physical and spiritual realms are at their thinnest. Beltane mirrors this phase and as Samhain opens the gateway of winter and the underworld , Beltane brings the promise of Summer and emerging new life. This is the cross quarter point when the land starts to bloom with the energy of creation, providing a lense to consider what we may feel the need to nurture and blossom in our own lives.
About Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris)
The name Artemisia orginates from Artemis - the ancient greek moon goddess who protected women and the animals of the wild, casting her magic over childbirth and cycles of nature.
This association with creative energy and the feminine traditionally links Mugwort to Spring and Beltane since it's shoots and growth start to emerge in April/ May.
Mugwort has been burned as a protective incense throughout history and in medieval folk medicine it was considered a magical herb for ritual , purification and to enhance dreams. It was also taken medicinally as a digestive or menstrual tonic and prescribed by midwives to ease the transition of childbirth.
The energy of Mugwort is warming with an earthy mineralised taste and it drives cold and damp from the body. A variety which grows in China is burned in Traditional Chinese Medicine close to the skin to bring warmth into the body and in western herbal medicine it's prescribed for its medicinal effect on the nervous, reproductive and digestive systems.
As a herb connected to dream enhancement, Mugwort is a supportive ally to any meditative or ceremonial practice.
Looking forward to a night of sound and herb magick.
