Between Two Worlds

Brundibár Arts Festival is an annual festival dedicated to the music and arts of the Holocaust. Every year, the Festival plays an integral part in Newcastle City Council Holocaust Memorial Day Programme, creating events across Newcastle and Gateshead; to include concerts, exhibitions, theatre, cinema and an extensive education outreach programme.The Festival takes place in venues ranging from local hidden gems to international concert halls and offers a performance platform to young artists, local talents as well as internationally acclaimed soloists.The Festival is named after Hans Krása's opera "Brundibár" (meaning bumblebee) written in 1938 and performed 55 times by the children of Theresienstadt concentration camp. Our Festival is named after the Opera as a lasting  tribute the children of Theresienstadt.The Festival brings people together to appriciate music and drama and aims to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of the arts within the context of remembering the victims of the Holocaust in positive and aspirational ways. It also provides a platform upon which to give exposure to relatively unknown, yet wonderful music which was either written during the Holocaust or has a connection to it.

Hollywood, 1945. Erich Wolfgang Korngold is facing a moment of crisis. Since the Anschluss sent him and his family into exile in 1938, the Jewish composer - formerly a celebrated child prodigy in Vienna - has devoted himself to writing film music. He has always endured a toxic relationship with his father, the music critic Julius Korngold, whose smothering, controlling attitude has made life a misery. But now, with the end of World War II and the death of Julius, Erich and his wife, Luzi, must take stock of where he is, and why, and where to go from here. Should he return to the concert hall and Vienna? Can he resurrect his dreams? This play with music casts Korngold’s dilemmas into sharp perspective, 125 years after his birth. It sheds fresh light on a man and musician of integrity, honour and enormous heart who had a constant struggle against the vicissitudes of fate.
