Beyond Image

Flat Time House (FTHo) was the studio home of John Latham (1921-2006), recognised as one of the most significant and influential British post-war artists. In 2003, Latham declared the house a living sculpture, naming it FTHo after his theory of time, ‘Flat Time’. Until his death, John Latham opened his door to anyone interested in thinking about art. It is in this spirit that Flat Time House opened in 2008 as a gallery with a programme of exhibitions and events exploring the artist's practice, his theoretical ideas and their continued relevance. It also provides a centre for alternative learning, which includes the John Latham archive, and an artist's residency space.

Flat Time House and the Roberts Institute of Art are pleased to present Beyond Image, an evening of music and visuals at Peckham Audio. At the centre of the event is On Edge By Aim, a new performance by artist Damien Roach under his cross-media project, patten, which has been created in response to and presented alongside Boyle Family’s film ‘Beyond Image’. On Edge By Aim draws upon Boyle Family’s central participation in the 1960s cross-pollination of popular culture and the avant-garde, and will debut as part of an evening of live music and visuals also featuring Silvia Kastel and Flora Yin Wong with a DJ set by Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey. This event has been organised as part of the public programme to <a href="http://flattimeho.org.uk/exhibitions/gone-fishing/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gone Fishing </a>(16 June–17 July), an exhibition at Flat Time House in collaboration with the Roberts Institute of Art featuring artwork by Boyle Family, John Latham, Marlie Mul and Damien Roach. Damien Roach’s multidisciplinary practice is concerned with creative thinking, flexible modes of being, and the unfixed nature of perception, often using various pop cultural materials as accessible sites for the exploration of these ideas. On Edge By Aim (an anagram of ‘Beyond Image’) is drawn from archival research into the Boyle Family’s liquid light projections. Performed both in gallery spaces and as visual accompaniment for Soft Machine and Jimmy Hendrix, Boyle Family’s light shows experimented with the re-presentation of the Earth’s elements, magnifying various chemical and physical reactions using projectors. Roach’s interpretation draws upon the instability of these processes and also seeks to echo the present-ness of the original materials by creating an open, constantly shifting score where sequences of melodic figures and physically affecting sounds are dialled through at speed to perform a forensic investigation into transitional states. Using a near-encyclopaedic set of aesthetic modes excavated from the history of avant-garde composition, from musique concrète to psych, American minimalism, ambient, microsound, and glitch, along with precision-programmed lighting, On Edge By Aim is a multisensory audiovisual experience of formidable emotional and psychological effect.Damien Roach (patten) is a London-based artist, researcher and lecturer. His projects span art, design &amp; creative direction, publishing, sound/music and audiovisual. Recent projects include immersive AV performances at London’s ICA and Tate Modern, design for clients ranging from Caribou to Disney, and publishing a journal exploring non-dystopic future visions with a host of contributors including Susan Hiller, Dr Isabella Maidment, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Liam Gillick. He has exhibited internationally, including at the 51st Venice Biennale, ‘Learn to Read’ at Tate Modern, Art Now at Tate Britain, ‘Housewarming’ at Swiss Institute NYC, and solo presentations at institutions including DRAF, London, Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Switzerland, Arnolfini, Bristol, Gasworks, London, and Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Germany. Mark Leckey was born in Birkenhead, UK, 1964 and lives and works in London. Her debut album &#x27;Holy Palm&#x27; was released on Modern Love in 2020 as a 2x gatefold vinyl, and previously appeared on labels like PAN, Archaic Vaults, and Danse Noire. She has performed live at ATONAL, Unsound, MACRO Roma, Fondation Beyeler Basel, MUTEK in Peru, Buenos Aires, and Montreal, New York’s ISSUE Project Room, Volksbühne Theatre Berlin, The V&amp;A Museum, Somerset House, and Cafe OTO in London, as well as DJed at Boiler Room, Berghain, Razzmatazz, WWWB Tokyo, Cakeshop Seoul, etc. Her first book ‘Liturgy&#x27;, exploring abstract fiction and non-fiction across themes of religion, mythology, and paradoxes was published in 2021 on PAN x Primary Information. She regularly guests on radio shows for NTS Live, The Lot, LYL, Know Wave, Balamii, BCR, Red Light and Refuge etc, and has been commissioned on mixes for Resident Advisor, FACT Mag, and The Wire.Hailing from Puglia in Southern Italy, artist/DJ Silvia Kastel’s musical background began in experimental voice and electronics while studying sound engineering and electronic music in New York. Evolving into DJing while based in Berlin between 2014 and 2018, first on radio and then in clubs, and now based in London with a monthly residency on NTS, her range has expanded to combine this history of sonic exploration of the outer edges with sensual club music that fuses pop with bass-heavy driving polyrhythms. From founding her own label Ultramarine in 2009 (now on hiatus), she was already a prominent figure on the experimental and electronic underground when her debut album, ‘Air Lows’ dropped on Blackest Ever Black in 2018. Recent releases include Shakey (Palto Flats, 2020), debut from her collaboration with Wilted Woman, the track “Ormai”, out on the Hyperdub x Adult Swim compilation, and a remix for Howie Lee. For this live AV show, she will present new, upcoming and unreleased material. The partnership explores ideas in Latham’s work through performance-based commissions and a selection of key works from the Collection. 2021 was the centenary year of John Latham’s birth, and the collaboration has developed from a conversation between RIA and FTHo around finding new perspectives on Latham’s work through a dialogue between the David and Indrė Roberts Collection and the John Latham archive. <a href="http://flattimeho.org.uk/exhibitions/gone-fishing/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gone Fishing</a> (16 June–17 July) is the third in the trilogy of exhibitions produced in this collaboration between Flat Time House (FTHo) and the Roberts Institute of Art (RIA). Each exhibition explores a different facet of the complex network of ideas surrounding John Latham’s work in dialogue with important works from the David and Indrė Roberts Collection. Gone Fishing expands from the relationship between Latham and Boyle Family, drawing on both artists’ pioneering work in understanding sculpture as conceptual art and central participation in the cross-pollination of popular culture and the avant-garde.
