Helensburgh CND's upcoming fourth annual conference Beyond Nuclear follows on from a number of conversations held last year between Ellen Renton, Ian Fairlie and Arthur West, mostly in the context of the worrying developments at the Hunterston Power Station in Ayrshire.
It was designed essentially to answer the question: "Why would we in Scotland want or need to have nuclear power stations when we have almost unlimited potential for clean, renewable energy production?" Consequently Beyond Nuclear will be a day of two halves, with an examination of the downside of nuclear power in the morning and the potential for renewables in the afternoon.
Lynn Jamieson (Chair Scottish CND) will lead off by establishing the link between nuclear power and nuclear weapons, then Rae Street (CND UK) will talk about the CND campaign 'No to Nuclear Power', concentrating on expensive, dirty and dangerous. Next up will be the well-known radiation consultant Ian Fairlie providing us with an update on Hunterston, and he will be followed by Cllr Audrey Doig (Vice-Convenor Scottish NFLA) on the unfortunately typical lack of preparedness for any nuclear incident whether involving weapons or power stations.
After lunch which will be provided on site, Mike Danson (Professor of Enterprise Policy at Herriot-Watt University) will start the afternoon with an overview of renewables in Scotland, then David Toke (Reader in Energy Politics at Aberdeen University) will be talking about the capability of renewables to supply not just electricity but 100% of UK energy needs. Pete Roche (No2Nuclear) will explore the jobs aspect particularly in relation to 'Just Transition', and the conference will conclude with an examination of renewables in relation to climate change by Mark Ruskell (MSP and Green Party Spokesperson for Energy and Climate).
Beyond Nuclear will be livestreamed by Independence Live, and media managed by Alannah Maurer and David Newbigging.
The conference will take place on Saturday 4th April from 11:00am until 5:00pm at Adelaide Place Baptist Church on Bath Street in Glasgow. Doors open and Registration from 10am.
