Description

BEYOND

Thursday October 5th 2017

All day conference and project launch at the Miners Institute Newcastle, followed by an evening event at the Ballroom, Culture Lab, Newcastle University.

ACA is delighted to announce BEYOND.

BEYOND is an ambitious arts project that will invite a mix of artists, curators, scientists and audiences to take advantage of the new astronomical observatory on ACA premises.

To launch the project we are hosting a conference with presentations by artists, curators, scientists and trans-discipline academic researchers. The aim of the conference is to consider what we imagine is BEYOND our current knowledge and imagined possibilities. We want this to be an open ended starting point for discussion, research and the creation of new work. The conference will provoke ideas and questions about our insatiable human desire for discovery, knowledge, understanding and belief.

Contributors will include: international curator Rob La Frenais with Martine Michard from MAGCP.fr presenting EXOPLANET where artists are asked to re-imagine their own region as a near earth planet; Rachel Armstrong and Rolf Hughes from Experimental Architecture at Newcastle University who will traverse the fields of architecture, biomedicine, darkness and the 'void' of interstellar space; John Bowers, Alan Smith and Louise K Wilson presenting Chthonic a 3 day subterranean experience linking ACA’s interest in the realms of the underground with those of infinite space; Chris Welch from the International Space University in Strasbourg sharing his knowledge on the newest technologies and discoveries in space exploration; and Dr Pete Edwards from Durham University who will talk about the invisible yet accountable nature of dark matter and dark energy.

The word BEYOND will lure us to a place that has not yet been arrived at or is further than we can currently reach or see.

Residency opportunities for artists and information on the forthcoming programme at ACA will be announced at the event.

The event will be in 2 parts:

Part one: daytime at the Miners Institute Newcastle

Part two: evening at the Ballroom in Culture Lab - short presentations, showcase of artworks and live performance by the Digital Cultures Research Group.

Lunchtime and early evening buffets will be provided.

Confirmation of times and programme details will be added soon.

The event is free and open to anyone interested in BEYOND.

Numbers are limited and booking is essential through eventbrite.
