Event description

Description

SYLA has teamed up with Axiom Advocates to provide a conference on defamation law. Defamation, reputation management and privacy are all areas that many firms and individuals need to consider more and more in this social media age. This conference will provide an overview of the recent case law, the issues that are of our time and provide an idea of how the media is affected by the law. This is a chance to hear not only about the law but also to gain an understanding of how the law is experienced by those in the media industry.

Our speakers:

Mark Daly is an investigative correspondent with the BBC. Mr Daly started his career at the BBC in 2002. He has had a very interesting career that has seen him expose racism within the police force, sexual abuse at a school and drug abuse in sport. As a journalist he has helped to reveal the stories that certain people don’t want you to hear.

Mark will help us to understand the issues that are faced by journalists and share his own experiences.

Kenny McBrearty QC: Kenny called to the Bar in 2000 and his practice is centred predominantly in the fields of commercial law and professional negligence but his ability to provide strong oral advocacy has seen him instructed in a wide range of cases, in both private and public law. He has appeared in cases relating to, amongst other matters, commercial contracts, banking, the misuse of confidential information, professional negligence (involving accountants, solicitors, surveyors, engineers and doctors), insurance, intellectual property, partnership, planning, product liability, property law, sports law, fire recovery, flooding, private international law, telecommunications, extradition, freedom of information, human rights and challenges to Acts of the Scottish Parliament. He has appeared at all levels of the Scottish court system, including the Supreme Court.

Roddy Dunlop QC: Roddy Dunlop has a wide and varied caseload which has given him a great deal of experience in court, appearing at every level within the Scottish civil court system. His expertise covers media law, professional negligence, professional discipline, insurance law, commercial disputes, procurement, intellectual property, human rights, prescription and limitation, and judicial review. He is the only Scottish silk to be ranked in seven separate practice areas by Chambers UK, who place him as a Band 1 Silk in the areas of professional discipline, professional negligence, commercial dispute resolution, media law, medical negligence and public procurement.

There will be an opportunity to network following the event.
