Beyond the Bench: A seminar about extra-judicial engagement

Newcastle Law School (with funding from the Society for Legal Scholars) is delighted to invite registrations for a half day conference about extra-judicial engagement. ‘Extra-judicial engagement’ is broadly defined to include any judicial discourse outside of legal judgment, such as: television, radio and print-media interviews, select committee appearances, speeches, academic publications, diaries and memoirs. The event and corresponding contributions will ask and answer core questions about the nature, value and significance of extra-judicial activities: who judges are speaking to, who is listening? Why do some judges make extra-judicial contributions more than others? What topics do judges have authority to speak on, and what responsibility do they hold when they do make remarks? How are extra-judicial remarks prepared, and by whom? Do extra-judicial engagements allow judges to exhibit a degree of individuality, beyond what is possible in the courtroom? Finally, the discussants will consider why we value extra-judicial engagement.

Keynote Speaker &amp; PanellistsLord Dyson will give the keynote speech and two distinguished panels will consider the nature, value and significance of extra-judicial activities. ‘Ticket’ types: in-person / online: This event will be in-person, unless circumstances necessitate a move online.
