Energy and inflation shocks have led to cost of living crises in many countries, alongside climate and ecological breakdown, growing inequality, and conflicts arising from deeply extractive economic models. And the most damaging impacts of all these crises fall disproportionately on those that are least responsible for them in the Global South.The IMFS is inherently unjust and rooted in neo-colonial legacies. Sitting at its heart is a strict hierarchy of currencies - with the dollar at the top - which upholds the global inequalities we see today, and causes money to flow in the wrong direction, from poor to rich, and the Global South to the Global North. But there is an alternative.New technology and payment systems, including central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), the reform of the existing IMFS institutions, alongside widespread debt cancellation, could together make the IMFS fairer, and build a new financial architecture to bypass the dollar-centric IMFS and reshape global financial power dynamics.Join us on the 11th December to hear more and share questions with our speaker panel.___More about our speakersDr. Ndongo Samba Sylla is a Senegalese development economist based in Dakar. He is currently the Africa region Director for Research and Policy at the International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs). He previously worked as a technical advisor at the Presidency of the Republic of Senegal. He authored The Fair Trade Scandal. Marketing Poverty to Benefit the Rich (Pluto Press &amp; Ohio University Press, 2014) and co-authored Africa’s Last Colonial Currency. The CFA Franc Story (Pluto Press, 2021).Dr Andrés Arauz is an academic and policy researcher with expertise in money and technology, government procurement, development planning, macroeconomics, illicit financial flows, and finance. He holds the position of Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Economic and Policy Research and has authored several reports on Special Drawing Rights and Latin American economies. Additionally, he has a broad policy background and experience in the Ecuadorian government. His roles have included serving as a financial policy advisor at the Ministry of Economic Policy, Chief Operating Officer at the Central Bank, Under Secretary for Public Investment, Deputy Secretary for Planning at the National Planning Secretariat, General Director of the Public Procurement Agency, and Minister of Knowledge and Human Talent.Dr Devika Dutt is a Lecturer in Development Economics at King's College, London. Her research is focused on the political economy of foreign exchange intervention, central bank swap agreements, the political economy of development policy (especially as it relates to international financial institutions), macroeconomic policy in developing economies, and decolonising economics.Jerome Phelps has been Head of Advocacy at Debt Justice since February 2021. Jerome previously worked on migrants’ rights as Director of Detention Action and International Detention Coalition, working on successful campaigns against the Detained Fast Track asylum process and (partially successfully) against indefinite immigration detention. Jerome has written for Jacobin, Tribune and the New Internationalist among others, as well as many policy reports and as a consultant for the Council of Europe.Danisha Kazi joined Positive Money in 2020. She has a Master’s in Development Economics and a PhD in Economics from SOAS University. She has previously worked as a Senior Teaching Fellow at SOAS lecturing in heterodox economics. Her research interests include macroeconomics, political economy of labour, the role of the state, and global racial capitalism.
