Beyond Validation: From Approved Phonics Programme to Embedded Practice

Beyond Validation: From Approved Phonics Programme to Embedded Practice

Online event
Thursday, May 7 from 4 pm to 5 pm GMT+1
Overview

We explore what it looks like to successfully embed a systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme across your educational setting.

Join us for our TeachMeet, as we explore why choosing a validated phonics programme is only the starting point. Drawing on real school practice, the session will unpack what effectively embedding an SSP Programme actually looks like across a setting.

Speaker Laura Brogan, National Phonics Lead at Twinkl, will discuss:

  • why validation alone does not guarantee impact on pupil outcomes;
  • the difference between compliance and embedded, high-quality phonics practice;
  • how leadership, training, assessment and culture interact to sustain impact;
  • what strong implementation looks like beyond the first year of rollout.

Laura brings over a decade of leadership experience, including school and trust leadership roles. She specialises in phonics implementation, sustainability and improving practice across schools and trusts.

Who is this event for?

This TeachMeet is designed for Senior Leaders and Trust Leaders, Reading, English and Phonics Leads, and School Improvement Partners working across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 (including intervention and catch-up), and will be particularly relevant for leaders responsible for implementation, consistency and impact.

What will I gain by attending this session?

You should leave this session with practical strategies you can implement, including:

  • practical ways to align training, assessment and classroom practice;
  • strategies for supporting staff confidence and consistency over time;
  • clear indicators of whether phonics is truly embedded or slipping into routine compliance.

These strategies are designed to support informed decision-making and sustained improvement.

Why attend?

  • Goes beyond product selection and tackles the real challenge schools face after validation.
  • Leadership-focused, grounded in implementation research and lived school experience.
  • Honest and practical, acknowledging the complexity of embedding phonics well.
  • Applicable across programmes, not tied to one scheme.
  • Balances strategic insight with classroom reality, making it relevant for both leaders and practitioners.

This TeachMeet is designed to support schools in achieving lasting impact, not just meeting requirements.
