To celebrate one of melodrama’s greatest contemporary masters, Theatreship will screen a mini-series of key works by the legendary Pedro Almodóvar - “All About Almodóvar”. This evening is dedicated to the captivating modern melodrama “Volver” (2006) where Almodóvar returns to his native La Mancha for a ghost story centered on female resilience.
After a family tragedy, Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) and her sister are reunited with the ghost of their deceased mother, forcing them to confront long-buried secrets. A beautifully woven tapestry of love, secrets, and an unwavering belief in the strength of women, this film is a testament to the powerful bonds of family.
The screening will be paired with a live performance from East London, alternative pop music artist, Millie Turner. Known for blending avant-garde lyrics and aesthetics with mainstream pop, songs such as January and Swimming Pool have over 10 million listens on Spotify and her work has appeared in numerous TV series, such as Netflix legal drama Legal Break and HBO series The New Pope.
From touring with Tove Lo to singing in empty churches, her sound is rooted in a devotion to creative expression and she is welcome back to Theatreship.
Her performance will include new material to be released that ties in the the strength and vulnerabilies of the strong female lead in Volver.
