Every day, thousands of the children and young people who live here are inspired by the city’s culture to unleash their own creative side. They have the chance to develop their skills, talents and passions, becoming people who can thrive in a challenging, changing world and boost our wider society.But there are also thousands of young people who miss out on London’s creative opportunities. Barriers of inequality or simple lack of support stop young people from reaching their creative potential, which has knock-on effects for their chances of personal fulfilment and success in later life.What is the vision of A New Direction?Inequality is not set in stone; we can make London into a city with equal opportunities to engage with culture and be creative for all young people and children. This is our vision.We are working towards a society where all children and young people can thrive through developing their creativity.What does A New Direction do?We work directly with the organisations at the front line: schools, cultural venues, local authorities and businesses. We unite those organisations to campaign for better policies that serve children and young people. We organise joint events and projects to reach a broader audience. We connect young people to mentors, work experience and inspiration.Who does A New Direction help?Children and young people in London and through helping them, wider society.

The Big Change Series is designed to support London’s cultural sector with a space for innovation, challenge and learning

Join A New Direction for the second of three sessions for looking at the big issues affecting the arts, cultural and heritage sectors.This session will explore audience engagement; sharing examples of good practice across small-scale programming with communities, pan-London projects and national initiatives. The event is is best suited to those working at any level in communications, participation, or strategy in arts and cultural education.Kicking off the afternoon, we are delighted to host a talk from Clarrie Wallis, Curator of Modern and Contemporary British Art at Tate. Clarrie will share learning from <a href="https://www.anewdirection.org.uk/steve-mcqueen-year-3" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Year 3</a>, a high-profile collaboration with artist Steve McQueen, focusing on how ambitious content and clear messaging can be used to best effect large scale programming. The session will also feature two workshops with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and Korantema Anyimadu, freelance curator and Communities Manager at Arts Emergency. Both will examine work with audiences at scale, segmented audience engagement and inclusive programming. The afternoon will be a chance to hear from expert speakers, get hands-on with some practical activities, and explore a number of case studies and examples of best practice.The <a href="https://www.anewdirection.org.uk/what-we-do/our-work-with-cultural-sector/big-change-series-2019-20" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Big Change Series 2019/20</a> is central to A New Direction’s sector support role for children and young people across London, and is also a chance for us to discuss and enhance our offer of support.
