Biggus Icarus - Preview Day

‘Biggus Icarus’ is a solo exhibition by Rosie McGinn following an extended year-long graduate residency at Lewisham Arthouse.

On October 14, 2012 at 127,851 ft, Biggus Icarus whispered “I’m going home now” before stepping off a helium powered Rod Bell capsule and free falling to Planet Earth. On his descent from the edge of space, reaching speeds of 843mph he became the first human to break the sound barrier without the aid of engine power. After momentarily losing consciousness and spinning out of control he regained stability and with a parachute successfully landed on his feet in the New Mexican desert where he dropped to his knees and punched the sky.‘Biggus Icarus’ is Rosie McGinn’s solo exhibition following an extended year-long graduate residency at Lewisham Arthouse. The show will feature a large inflatable sculpture of a human free-falling from the stratosphere surrounded by a sequence of drawings and paintings that explore ‘A History of Human Flight.’ From a Benedictine Monk fixing wings to his hands and feet and jumping from the top of Malmesbury Abbey to a Serbian flight attendant surviving a plane crash to Icarus flying too close to the sun; this new watercolour series continues McGinn’s research into the human spirit of exploration. Climbing higher, scratching that itch, reaching the furthest corners of our universe before turning on the last rung of the ladder, looking back down at the glowing lightbulb planet below and surrendering ourselves to the complete mercy of nature.Visiting Lewisham Arthouse Safely During CoronavirusWe are delighted to re-open our doors and welcome you back. We have put in place some practical measures to keep everyone as safe as possible. Please familiarise yourself with these before arriving:- Please stay at home if you have any symptoms of the virus, have reason to quarantine or have been in close contact with the disease in the past two weeks- With social distancing the maximum number of visitors in the project space is limited to 12 at any one time - For preview days and events that may attract larger groups of people please pre book a free time slot via Eventbrite. Your contact information will be kept for two weeks and be used only in the event of a localised outbreak- Face coverings for your mouth and nose are required unless you are medically exempt. The coordinators will be wearing face coverings. - Social distancing is required, please keep 2metres distance from the coordinators and your fellow visitors- A one-way system will be in place for moving through the lobby and into the gallery space- Hand sanitiser is available on entering the building- Increased cleaning regimes of public areas and toilets will be in place- We regret that our usual donations bar will be suspended for the time being- Opening dates, times and policy are subject to change.
