Join us on week 3 of this Birdwatching for Beginners Course at Portland Bill where we will be looking at seabirds and birds on migration.
Join us for week 3 of our Birdwatching for Beginners Course. In this final week we will be learning how to identify some of the passing spring migrants and sea birds found at Portland Bill. We recomend attending all 3 weeks of this course and you will recieve a free copy of the Bloomsbury Concise Bird Guide if you do so.
Portland Bill is an internationally important areas for nature conservation, supporting a great diversity of wildlife in this ever changing coastal habitat.
Throughout the guided walk we will aim to spot as many species of birds as possible, and an early start offers the best chance to see many of our incoming spring migrants and seabirds including swallows, gannets, terns and waders. As well as birding hints and tips there will be plenty of time to ask questions and more information about the site will be given throughout the walk.
The walk will start at 06:30am and will last for approximately 2 hours. Please aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before the start time.
Please bring with you binoculars and if you have a telescope that may be useful too. We do have a very limited number of binoculars to borrow and there will also be use of a telescope.
This event is suitable for beginners to birdwatching and for families, but all children (min age 8yrs) must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Sturdy footwear (eg walking boots) is recommended as we will be going over some uneven ground, and as the site is fairly exposed, please bring with you plenty of warm clothing and waterproofs just in case!
Unfortunately, no dogs are permitted on this event.
There is a large council-owned pay and display car park next to the Portland Bill Lighthouse. Please note, parking charges are not included in the event ticket cost.
If coming to Portland Bill by public transport then use the number 1 bus service. Travelling in from Weymouth direction the closest bus stop is at Portland Bill. It is then approximately a 2 minute walk to the lighthouse where we will meet.
