Blank Slate: Southend Sails
We’ll be working around one big question: What makes you feel like you’ve got the wind in your sails?
For ages 123 to 16 years only.
You’re invited to take part in a hands-on embroidery session for Southend Sails — a large public artwork that will be installed on Southend High Street.
In this session, you’ll work with artist Katrin Mountain to create stitched designs on reclaimed sail cloth. We’re focusing specifically on embroidery — adding words, symbols, drawings and patterns using thread. No sewing experience needed, just bring your ideas.
During the workshop, you will develop ideas through discussion and design exploring themes connected to Southend, the sea and the Thames Estuary whilst learning basic embroidery techniques.
You will have the opportunity to contribute stitched messages and imagery to a large-scale artwork.
We’ll be working around one big question:
What makes you feel like you’ve got the wind in your sails?
Your work will become part of a public artwork seen by the whole town, carrying messages of hope, love and motivation from the community.
This session is part of the wider Southend Sails programme, and you’re also welcome to join any of the other workshops taking place across the project.
Come stitch something that becomes part of Southend’s story.
