This introductory course will provide a general introduction to the biology, ecology and field-based identification of the most common moss species associated with peatlands. The course will be hands-on and combine classroom and field-based elements and provide tools for trainees to develop their own identification skills beyond the course.
Topics covered indoors and onsite will include:
- Introduction to bryophyte biology and taxonomy
- Introduction to keys and common moss species in peatland locations
- Field-based identification of common species of bog bryophytes
- Basic microscopic skills for bryophyte identification.
Joining instructions: The course starts in the Education Room at RSPB Forsinard.
Delegates must bring sufficient warm and waterproof clothing and footwear to allow for being outside in winter for a number of hours. There will be some offroad travel to get to the peatland site, if you have a vehicle capable, it would be advised to bring it.
The training is fully-funded by NatureScot Peatland ACTION. However, places are limited and anyone booking a place and failing to turn up may be charged a proportion of the cost of their place.
