Part of a series: Where Plants and People Meet The South London Botanical Institute in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London About the SessionsThis will be a relaxed, thought provoking and accessible group for people to read sections of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass together. The book has and continues to be at the centre of ongoing conversations about indigenous knowing and its relationship to science.We’ll meet three times. You can come to one or all the sessions. We have some copies of the book to borrow with thanks to West Norwood Library and we will make chapters available in other formats.The first two sessions: Tuesday 11th and 18th June will be at the West Norwood Library, 1-5 Norwood High St, Norwood, SE27 9JUThe last session: Tuesday 25th June will be at the South London Botanical Institute, 323 Norwood Road, SE24 9AQ At the last session we’ll be able to look around the Institute and its garden.11th June We will be reading the following chapters: ‘Skywoman Falling’ and ‘Asters and Goldenrod’ (West Norwood Library)18th June We will be reading: ‘Epiphany in the Beans’ and ‘Three Sisters’ (West Norwood Library)25th June We will be reading: ‘Mishkos Kenomagwen: The Teachings of Grass’ and ‘Epilogue: Returning the Gift’ (South London Botanical Institute) All welcome! There will be snacks. Who are the Facilitators? The reading group will be facilitated by Giulia Carabelli (Queen Mary University of London) and Elyssa Livergant (Director, South London Botanical Institute)Dr Giulia Carabelli is Senior Lecturer in Social Theory in the School of Politics and International Relations and the Director of the Environmental Futures research programme in the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London. Her current research, “Care for Plants” (IG @careforplants), explores the roles of houseplants in making home during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. In 2023, with Matthew Beach, she co-curated “Cabinet Cultures”, an exhibit at The Garden Museum about the values of houseplants in our homes. About the Programme‘Where Plants and People Meet’ is a collaborative programme between the South London Botanical Institute (SLBI) and academics at Queen Mary University of London. It features discussions and workshops focused on plants, people and participation and runs from the 11-29th June 2024. The programme marks the beginning of a two-year reopening process for the SLBI following a long period of closure. ‘Where Plants and People Meet’ is co-curated by Dr. Giulia Carabelli and made possible with support from Queen Mary’s Centre for Public Engagement, Large Grant.
