PROMOTING INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIPThe UK Community Renewal Fund is a new government programme for 2021/22. This initiative seeks to promote community resilience and pilot new approaches to support both business and people.This project is funded  by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund.’  This aims to support people and communities most in need across the UK to pilot programmes and new approaches to prepare for the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It invests in skills, community and place, local business, and supporting people into employment.£1m awarded to PETROC College for 2 projects; promoting business innovation and development through new digital technologies; and youth and community activity across Northern Devon, focusing on those harder to reach in rural and coastal communities.This project will seek to utilise new digital technology (Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality) and knowledge transfer to fast-track innovation and upskilling across businesses in Northern Devon.  We will also bring togetherLibraries Unlimited(BIPC,FabLab Devon),Cotie&Nodeto ensure a more joined-up and coherent offer around business innovation support.  This project will be delivered across Mid Devon, North Devon, West Devon and Torridge with West Devon and Torridge being the priority areas.For more information, visithttps://www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-community-renewal-fund-prospectus/uk-community-renewal-fund-prospectus-2021-22There are three strands of activity within this bid:Developing and piloting the use of AR, VR & MR to tackle the work placement bottleneck, focused on skills shortage occupations; to enhance decision-making regarding careers     choices, especially through rural outreach; and to encourage employer innovation and entrepreneurship.Development of joint working between Fablab, Cotie & Node to deliver rural outreach, encourage entrepreneurship and support early-stage start-ups and micro-businesses to grow.Piloting of small-scale knowledge transfer to promote entrepreneurship and business growth, including the use of alternative meeting technologies.Cotie has been developed in association with Petroc, and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)Node Coworking is receiving up to £2,932,162 of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)The FabLab project was originally funded by Devon County Council, the ACE Bridge Challenge Fund run by the Real Ideas Organisation and the Digital Makers Fund (run by Nesta and Nominet Trust, in partnership with Autodesk). Barnstaple Library FabLab was set up with Arts Council England funding.  Both sites are now run by Libraries Unlimited which is the local reading charity that runs libraries across Devon and Torbay.#UKCOMMUNITYRENEWALFUND

Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term covering technologies that merge the physical ‘real world’ with the virtual ‘digital world’.Virtual reality (VR) technology immerses the user into a fully digital environment. This digital environment comprises of a variety of digital objects that the user can interact with through either moving or gesturing in the real world. Current VR systems mostly use a headset, consisting of a display placed in front of the eyes to fill the peripheral vision and provide a sense of depth. Other VR systems include multiple projectors that shine onto a cylindrical or spherical screen to construct an expansive digital image.Augmented reality (AR) technology overlays digital objects or information onto a visible real-world environment. Early examples include head-up displays (HUDs) in military aircraft, which project digital information onto a transparent screen in front of the pilot. However, nowadays AR systems can detect physical objects, use AI algorithms to interpret and map these objects, and then display appropriate information or animations on the screen. Mixed reality (MR) technology can be seen as a hybrid between VR and AR technologies. Similarly, to AR, MR technology superimposes digital objects onto a physical environment, however MR technologies also enables for the user to interact with these digital objects. For example, by tracking hand-movements, MR technology allows for digital objects to be moved or manipulated using gestures. This technology therefore adds an extra layer of immersion compared to AR, whilst maintaining the visual perspective of the real world (unlike VR).
