Event description

Description

'There is a geography to breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in public is about breastfeeding in front of others, and it includes many different spaces, not those most obviously public like park or street benches. It can be private but public spaces such as cafes, restaurants, shopping malls. More welcoming common and public spaces are needed. Public spaces express many of the values and needs and prevalent uses of the spaces. If we are in spaces of consumption, like urban city centres, the shapes of these spaces favour circulation, movement, ability to access products and services. But breastfeeding requires, sometimes, to be able to sit down, take our time; to feel safe; to have shelter; to be able to accommodate our bodies and the things we carry.' - Lucila Newell, The Parlour 2017

Lisa Creagh and Lucila Newell look at the barriers to public breastfeeding and asks the question: “How can public spaces be designed to incorporate breastfeeding?”

Mothers, architects, public policy makers and anyone interested in the issue of designing public space to encourage and support breastfeeding are invited to attend this three hour workshop”

We will kickstart the session with an informal discussion of the issues around breastfeeding in public.

Some of the questions we will cover are:

- What has been your experience of breastfeeding in public?

- How do you feel/have you felt breastfeeding in public?

- Where have you breastfed in public? where is it good for you and why?

- What do you like about these places/spaces? what do you not like about them? What are the elements that make it good?

- We would think/dream aloud: What would your ideal places/spaces look like?

We will also create together a breastfeeding map of Brighton. We will mark where have you breastfeed and explore our private maps of breastfeeding in Brighton and Hove. How have you make the city your own?

And we will reflect on how could it be made better. We’ll think about existing spaces, but also about new designs that would work for us, for our bodies.
