A+E Lab presents 'Brightside VR' by dance artist Lydia Cottrell.  A spin class dance theatre VR experience explores health and well-being.

Get ready for an immersive experience at Brightside VR in A+E Lab!This year A+E Lab is delighted to host 2023 Choreodrome VR artist Lydia Cottrell with creative technologist Matthew Allen to our Lab in partnership with The Place, London’s leading centre for dance and performance.Join us on Friday 25th August at A+E Lab for public sharing of work-in-progress Brightside VR and discover what Lydia &amp; Matthew have created during their residency!Lydia Cottrell is a Leeds-based artist creating a multi-disciplinary performance that interrogates culture and technology. As part of her Choreodrome VR residency at A+E Lab, she will be developing in collaboration with creative technologist Matthew, an immersive, digital experience of “Brightside”, a part dance theatre, part spin class performance that explores the modern condition and the millennial psyche.Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to be a part of Brightside VR, a celebration of feeling good in your own skin, the positive impact of exercise on mental health, and the belonging that can only be found sweating it out with a bunch of strangers.This spin class dance theatre VR experience explores the world of ‘Generation Me’ soundtracked by a Millennial anthem. Car - Parking is available in the main visitor car park.The Galvanising Shop is next to the Visitor Entrance.Train - The nearest train station is Chatham, which is a 25-minute walk.Bus - Arrival bus routes 1 or 2 run frequently from Chatham Bus Station to Dock Rd near the car park.Facilities and accessibility:The venue is wheelchair accessible.There are accessible toilets available.Please let us know if you have any accessibility requirements by emailing to A+E Lab aecreativeworkshops@gmail.comTicket price:It's free! However we are a not-for-profit and can only operate with the support of grant funding and donations. Only if you can, please donate if you like us to host more events like this! Please note:1. You will be wearing a VR headset at your own risk. You can also enjoy the show from the projected screen.2﻿. We will have two VR headsets, one set up with a bike and one on a chair. About the artists:<a href="https://www.lydia-cottrell.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lydia Cottrell </a>Lydia Cottrell is a dancer based in Leeds that creates multi-disciplinary work. She also spends a lot of time on the internet. Her main areas of research focus on the Performance of Self in online spaces and the magic healing potential of memes. She makes performance, curates, produces, writes and interrogates culture and technology through her work.She trained vocationally, specialising in contemporary, ballet and flamenco, and has performed for many people including: Gary Clarke, Ann Liv Young and David Shearing. She has been awarded the Hull Dance Prize, the FLINTsparks Prize and the IDEA Assembly. As well as working as a dancer, uses her interest in online space to support arts organisations in creating online content. She has worked with many organisations including Compass Live Art, CLAY, CVAN and South Square. <a href="https://closedforum.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Matthew Allen</a>Matt is a Creative Technologist, Producer, and Artist based in Leeds. He has worked in the creative sector freelance and collaboratively since 2007. Previous experience includes freelance curatorial work and event management, producing for NPO/SSO East Street Arts on their National Guild programme, Company Director of Live Art Bistro and Centre For Live Art Yorkshire. Currently, Matt works as the Creative Technologist for LEEDS 2023 (Year of Culture) and as company director of Closed Forum, an independent arts and video game studio as well as working freelance.
