BSA Masterclass: Science Communication Primer

New to science communication and unsure where to start? This event is intended to give those new to science communication and engagement an overview of this varied sector. It is suitable for researchers with an interest in scicomm, those in the early stages of sci comm career, and any volunteers looking to expand their skills. The sessions will be really interactive, and a great way to meet others who are new to the sector. 
The interactive sessions will guide delegates through thinking about their audience, choosing the right medium for science communication, effective storytelling and evaluating their work. During the day, the programme will include guidance for delegates on the next steps for their career development. Katherine Mathieson, the BSA’s Director of Programmes, will facilitate over the course of the day, and sessions will be led by key practitioners and academics in science communication. 
After the training day, delegates will be invited to move on to the <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://scicommburrito.co.uk/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">SciComm burrito</A>, to relax with the other delegates, and meet the local science communication network in Manchester and the North West.

10:00 - Welcome from Katherine Mathieson
10:15 - What are you doing and why? How to understand your audience with Dr Jane Gregory
Dr Jane Gregory, programme director at the University of Manchester's Science Communication MSc,  takes us through the history of science communication, discussing how the practices of science communication have progressed and thinking about how we understand and engage with our audiences today.
11:30 - Networking Coffee Break
12:00 - Choosing the right medium for your message with Prof Andy Miah, Vic Gill &amp; Greta Santagata  
In this session, delegates will discuss the many methods of science communication with panelists Professor Andy Miah (University of Salford), Vic Gill (BBC) &amp; Greta Santagata (Oropendola Productions), who will be sharing their experiences of using innovative mediums and approaches to reach their audiences.

14:00 - Storytelling: Narratives in Science Communication with Dr Sam Illingworth
Science communicator and poet Dr Sam Illingworth discusses the role of storytelling and narratives in engaging audiences, looking at the important role they play across all sectors of science communication.
15:30 - Networking Coffee Break
16:00 - Success? Evaluating your work with Suzanne Spicer 
In our final session, University of Manchester social responsibility manager Suzzane Spicer takes us through the importance of evaluation and monitoring, looking at creative ways for science communicators to assess their progress and improve their work. 
17.00 - In Conversation with Dallas Campbell 
Katherine Mathieson will be joined by presenter, actor and writer Dallas Campbell to discuss his science communication journey from amateur enthusiast to TV personality, offering guidance to delegates on how to begin their own. 
 
17.30 - Event close
18:30 onwards - Sci Comm Burrito, Deansgate Barburrito 
Sci-comm burrito is a monthly-ish gathering of people who work in science communication, outreach or public engagement in Manchester. An excellent opportunity for networking, and for having a burrito!

<H4>Who should attend the event?</H4>
We take a really broad view of science communication, to include anyone who creates conversations about science, through any medium, or institution. We include scientists, volunteers, public engagement professionals and professional science communicators, journalists or educators, and this event is suitable for people who fall into any of these categories, or whose work involves talking about science.
The event is intended to give an overview of the sector, so is most suitable for people with less than two/three years of experience in the sector.
<H4>What happened to the Science Communication Conference? </H4>
The Conference has been a place for science communicators to get together and share learning and ideas since 2002. However, we have found that as the sector has grown and diversified, a single Conference has been unable to meet delegates varied needs and levels of experience. Following a consultation with the science communication community, the BSA has decided to launch a series of smaller, more targeted events, rather than a single Conference. The events are aimed at supporting science communicators at different stages of their careers.
<H4>What’s included in the ticket?</H4>
Tickets include participation in the workshop, delegate pack which they will complete throughout the day, access to the presentations and delegate lists and tea and coffee throughout the day. There are a number of local sandwich shops and restaurants near the venue or delegates are free to bring their own lunch.
