About this event

  • 1 hour

Join us for a collaborative beach clean event designed to bring together university staff and students in a united effort to keep our beautiful Brighton and Hove coastline pristine. This BSMS event is an excellent opportunity to foster a sense of community while making a positive environmental impact. BSMS staff and students interested in participating will meet at the Brighton Pier and work their way along the beach, collecting litter and debris to ensure our coastal area remains clean and enjoyable for all. Gloves, bags, and necessary equipment will be provided. After the clean-up, we will gather for refreshments and informal networking sessions where you can meet fellow researchers, exchange ideas, and build valuable connections. Let’s come together to protect our local environment, enjoy a rewarding afternoon by the sea, and strengthen our scientific community. This is one of the BSMS Green Impact Exercise & Wellbeing series of events organised by Dr Dorina Cadar & Cindy Eggleton, BSMS Green Impact Coordinators.

Promoting physical exercise and well-being at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) via the Green Impact Agenda involves incorporating initiatives that encourage physical activity while aligning with environmentally friendly practices and considering the issues of inclusivity, diversity, sustainability, and impact.

1. Environmental Awareness: Engaging in outdoor physical activities promotes a deeper connection with nature and fosters environmental awareness. BSMS is at the heart of two vibrant campuses situated at the edge of the South Downs National Park and near Brighton & Hove Beach. When people spend time outdoors exercising, they are more likely to appreciate and value the natural environment.

2. Reduced Carbon Emissions: Choosing active modes of transportation, such as cycling or walking instead of driving, helps reduce carbon emissions and air pollution. By encouraging exercise as part of Green Impact initiatives, BSMS can contribute to mitigating climate change and improving air quality.

3. Health and Well-being: Regular exercise is essential for maintaining good physical and mental health. By promoting exercise within Green Impact programs, BSMS commits to supporting the well-being of its members or employees. Physical activity reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improves mood, and enhances overall quality of life.

4. Community Engagement: Exercise-based activities can bring people together and foster a sense of community within our medical school. Organising group walks, cycling events, or outdoor fitness classes provide opportunities for social interaction and strengthens community bonds.

5. Promotion of Sustainable Lifestyles: Encouraging exercise as part of Green Impact initiatives aligns with the promotion of sustainable lifestyles. It emphasises the importance of incorporating eco-friendly practices into everyday activities, including recreational pursuits like physical exercise, walking, relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, meditation and yoga.

6. Educational Opportunities: Green Impact programs that include exercise components offer opportunities for education and awareness-raising about the interconnectedness of personal health and environmental sustainability not only within our medical school but also in the wider community. Students and staff members can be made aware or reminded about the benefits of outdoor exercise and its positive impact on both individual well-being and the environment.
