Bring a photograph / personal possession from your family archive or explore historical Brent figures to create your own styled  photoshoot!

Are you fascinated by your own or Brent’s mixed-race or multicultural family history? Are you a Brent resident or have links to the area? Are you passionate about fashion, styling and image-making? Then our photography workshop is the one for you! In this practical workshop, you will bring a photograph or personal possession from your family archive or be inspired by the many colourful stories we have unearthed during research for the BTCOTC project to use as a starting point to create your own styled and composed photoshoot about the life and times of your family members or the historical figures of Brent. With help from local artist Warren Reilly, you will pull references from the images/objects to help gain insights into your own or Brent’s mixed race and multicultural history and how you can use this to take inspiration within your very own photoshoot. By the end of the workshop, you will have a series of photographs on your digital device (mobile phone, DSLR etc) as well as a disposable film camera (provided by us) which you can go away after the work and use to further develop your ideas. Your photos may also end up as part of the BTCOTC digital exhibition!If you want to produce your own photoshoot inspired by your mixed-race/multicultural family, you must bring an original or photographic reproduction of: Family Photographs and Albums Personal Possessions Items of Jewellery Items of Clothing (scarves, hats, occasion wear) Articles from Newspapers, Magazines or Journals Official Documents/Files Furniture, Ornaments, Paintings or other Heirlooms.You do not have to be from a mixed race family to take part in our event! If you would like to produce a photoshoot based on one of the figures from mixed race families we have been researching during By The Cut of Their Cloth, then you can participate in the project using them as inspiration. You might wish to look at well-known Brent figures, such as Zadie Smith, or those from lesser-known Brent stories, such as Ram Singh Nehra and his wife Myfanwy. We can provide a list of choices and photos if this is the case – email us before the workshop via BTCOTCproject@yahoo.com for more information.This workshop is all about experimentation and exploring ideas so you can go away to create your own finalised, refined and completed photoshoot! All your final works and the film cameras provided by us must be returned to us at the library before the project open call deadline of Sunday 27th of Feb. This will ensure that we have the time to process your digital images as well as develop your film photography (the cost of which is covered by the project). If you do not return your camera by this date, we will be unable to curate your work into our online exhibition. This workshop is an all day workshop, 4 hrs 30mins (Including 45 Min Lunch Break). While a selection of art materials &amp; fabrics will be provided, these may be limited so we also encourage you to bring your own items to supplement your shoot, such as:A mobile phone or your own film/digital camera or DSLR camera Any lighting or equipment you wish to use Make up/props/accessories/jewellery/wigs/shoes Fabrics to drape on the body or to create the set around you. Items of clothing or costumes (perhaps you want to photograph yourself in a vintage piece that belonged to your family member or a look your styling takes inspiration from?) Your illustration/mood board from our previous workshops (if you attended) OR any ideas you wish to explore yourself on your own mood board.Printing costs are also free of charge during this workshop should you wish to use this facility during the creation of your photoshoot.The workshop is kindly hosted by The Library at Willesden Green. The workshop will take place in the performance space. * PLEASE NOTE that we cannot be held responsible for any loss, theft or damage during the workshop. Failure to attend to your own items is your own responsibility. Please make sure you attend to your items/equipment/possessions at all times!REFRESHMENTSDue to the rules and regulations of the Library at Willesden Green, There are no public water fountains available within the building so please ensure you have bought all that you need to sustain you during the workshops. There are many shops nearby where you can buy something to eat and drink. You are more than welcome to drink during the workshop, but food is not permitted until the designated lunch break. We kindly ask you not to leave for reason of refreshment during the workshop unless this is necessary, as not to disturb the running of the workshop. * Covid-19 NOTIFICATION FROM WILLESDEN GREEN LIBRARY *We look forward to welcoming you into the library/gallery/museum for our first in person event! In order to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the community we kindly ask that you take the following precautions:· Take a rapid lateral flow test within 24 hours prior to attending the event and do not attend if the result is positive. Find out where to get a test kit here· Following government guidelines, wear a mask inside our building unless exempt. · Use the free hand sanitiser available on entry to the building and wash your hands regularly· Limit close contact with others where possible· Do not attend the event if you feel unwell· Follow government guidance on when to self-isolate and take a PCR test if you have any symptoms of Covid-19· Numbers may be limited You may be asked by a member of staff to wait if the space is at capacityCONSENTAny member of the public who wishes to contribute to our workshop will need to complete our open day consent form so we can make sure that the information you have shared with the BTCOTC team can safely be included in the digital exhibition at The Mixed Museum or in our archive collections. You may do this before, during or after the workshop takes place using the form which we will send out to you prior to the event. We are happy to answer any questions about how your material and personal details will be used, either in person or by email via BTCOTCproject@yahoo.com.THE PROJECT Part of the #BeingBrent programme, ‘By The Cut Of Their Cloth’ (BTCOTC) is a collaborative project between Brent artist and designer Warren Reilly from Fashioning our History (www.brentfashioningourhistory.com) and The Mixed Museum (www.mixedmuseum.org.uk). Our project aims to explore and preserve Brent’s rich multicultural and mixed race history, and we are particularly interested in how fashion can help us understand and display hidden or overlooked histories. By inviting Brent residents to participate in sharing family histories and creative workshops, we hope that the stories uncovered by and created for the project will contribute to existing archival collections – such as that held by The Mixed Museum and Brent Museum and Archives – for future generations to study and enjoy.
